As advised I'd go with LOTR before WoT it's an epic series that unfortunately loses the plot halfway through and over that many books it can be a bit of a slog

It can indeed a bit of a slog to get through, but it ends spectacularly. Well worth the effort.

I just finished The long way to a small, angry planet by Becky Chambers. What a great read, wanted it to be longer.

Seriously?

I got like 35% in and it felt like documentary, "Facts about aliens". Nothing at all has happened. I gave up. Will maybe try it later.

Right, so on my home yesterday I listened to and read LOTR... stahp. I just can't. It bores me to tears, obviously because you know what'll happen next. And to be honest, the writing style seems so... i don't know. Not serious enough? So I gave up on that as well.

So, that led me go on the hunt for the next epic.

Last year I read/listened to the first book in the Night's Dawn series from Peter F Hamilton. Epic stuff in deed. Eventually went on to the second, but gave up halfway. Not because there was anything wrong with the book, but the audiobooks I had was just really crap quality and didn't do the book any justice. Also, the book is like hard science, so I frequently found myself missing some pieces.

I think I've now, as of yesterday, given up to try and read as much as possible (using audiobooks) in as little time as possible. So this is what I decided to do.

I will reread Reality Dysfunction (Night's Dawn #1). And when I say read. I mean read. No audiobooks.

This is going to take some time reading the whole series, from cover to cover. Not only do I read a little bit slowly (even though the kindle has made it a lot better), the series is a bit.... how shall I put it... long? 3books = over 5800 pages! :wtf:

So see you guys on the other side. :p

Have anybody read anything in this series?

Enjoy, I think there's something much more satisfying about reading versus being read to (my experience). The trip feels more like a relationship developing than a quick kiss in the dark from a stranger (paraphrasing Stephen King).

The Martian was a good book, funnier than I expected.
Just finished the Mark Lawrence Prince of Thorns Trilogy.

Now I've started the Long Earth series.

Anybody read The Dresden Files wondering if that worth my time?

I listen to the books while driving so does that count as reading? Reading with my ears.

Dresden Files is one of my fave series of all time. Caveat Emptor, the first 3 or 4 books aren't that good, cos he was still an inexperienced author. However, after that his writing skills ramp up fast. Also the story gets hectic and the character development is great. By the time you get a few more in, you'll be going "wtf just happened?!" after every book.
Also, next book due soon - normally releases one between July and September every 2 years or so.

Reading the book yourself, you assign your own voices to the characters which it always better a reader will sometime pull you out of the world with a odd accent for a character.

I spend a lot of time in the car and books and podcast help pass the time far more effectively than music, also I am a better driver cause I am not in a rush because I am actually doing something.

So I guess I'll give it a go .

You preachen to the choir here, but I've realised some books just need to be read, listen doesn't do them justice... so in future, I'll be more picky about what I listen to and what I only read.

How's kindle doing?

If I am not listening to books I am reading them on my Kindle the eInk is just as good as paper being non light emitting, so perfect to read before bed to relax you. I tried to read a normal paper book in bed the other day and it was a thick book and turning the pages was so awkward especially being a new book and I don't like cracking the spine, the weight of the book heavier than my kindle I just gave up and download the book. :D :D
