Still doing my David Eddings binge. Finished up Belgariad and Mallorean + Belgarath and Polgara books. Just started the Ellenium.

The first set I read a few times as a kid so it was like going back to a familiar place. The Elenium and Tumali I only read once and a long time ago so I have almost no recollection of the basic story besides a few disconnected events. Will be interesting to read them again.

Loved the Belgarion books, then ended up preferring the Sparhawk books. Such a great character.

I just finished Night Without Stars (Chronicle of the Fallers Book 2) by Peter Hamilton. I am a huge Hamilton fan because he manages to mix politics and sci-fi in such a realistic and believable way. I have loved all of the books based in the Commonwealth, but this book was slightly above average for me. We didn't really get to experience many of the loved characters. The story was interesting, and gripping in some parts, but I generally didn't have any sense of urgency when reading this book. Worth a read, but nothing to really write home about.

I am now tucking into Leviathan Wakes, which is part of the Expanse series.

Have you done Night's Dawn?

Yes - and it is hands down in my top 5 series. I have read every piece of Hamilton writing (except his children's books). This is mandatory reading for any sci-fi lover.

Do you find that you missed a lot of the story as a kid.

I re-read a book from my childhood the other day and realized i must have been skimming it.

Not so much with Eddings as he generally wrote for a younger audience. There is not a lot of depth to his writing I find. However I had that experience with Tad William. Read Memory Thorn and Sorrow series as a kid and found it Meh. Read it again as an adult and I found I was blown away by the depth of some of the characters and the story. The other thing I noticed is what an incredible wordsmith Tad Williams was. He couples adjectives that do not normally get grouped with specific nouns in very creative and enriching ways.

So I'm very close to finishing book 2 of Night's Dawn.... so I've started an audiobook to keep me occupied while walking until the new expanse novel hits in about 2 weeks.

Busy with the Barsoom Project, book two of the Dream Park series by Larry Niven and Steven Barnes. Read one of these books when I was much younger and you still required imagination to play an RPG, so when I saw these books recently I grabbed them. Not quite stood the test of time but a good trip back into memory and the 80s.

Dancers Lament

How's Dancer's Lament - I have tried ICE's books of the Malazan universe. I found his writing really poor, I tried return of the crimson guard and found it a slog. But I hear he's got better on subsequent reads and Dancer's lament is rated a bit better but I'm worried it's just die hard fans skewing the ratings.
