A blue one with the rally lights, extremely heavy pedals with heavy steering. All the torque was up high above 3000rpm and not much around idle. It would stall if I didn't get the clutch and accelerator action just right. None of the forgiving clutch action of modern cars.

And then a white Opel Senator with blue seats which was automatic and power everything. Easy and comfortable to drive.

Damn...look at dem blue seats & mats!

Nope. Everyone that did are now Pro racing drivers: Ken Block, Kimi Raikkonen, Valentino Rossi and the likes.

Started out on a yaris 1L automatic, the most horrendous engine and gearbox combination ever. Moved on to my mothers 2001 audi a4 and my fathers 2004 merc c180k and toyota tazz when I was doing my test.

When I was 6 my dad liked to freak people out,
He lower his seat so hes not easily visable to other drivers, put me on his lap and let me steer while he controlled the clutch and brakes

Priceless seeing people reactions to seeing a kid driving, and driving well.....

Also should point out on a rural road, and usually no traffic, except the odd bakkie

Afterwards instructors tazz, then 95 sentra with heavy gears and clutch, and currently picanto

Next car is a honda BRIO come hell or high water....

What a great thread! I started off learning how to drive at high school, but after two "lessons"; Driving Ed was cancelled for some reason. Then had lessons from my drunken father in a Ford Sierra 2.0. Didn't help much. But driving that tank of a Sierra on my own was how I did learn.

No power steering. The youngsters of today will not understand what this means; but I remember getting my first new car (1997 Opel Astra 160ie) with power steering; and then driving the old Ford back to the dealership just a week later. And thinking, jeez, what's wrong with this steering wheel!

My Dad's bakkie, a Mazda B2200 LWB .. I think it was around a 1996 model.

If we're talking motorcycles too my first was a Honda CG125, although I also had an old Yamaha AG100 which I played around off-road before I was 16 (ok once or twice on-road when no one was looking :p ).

Mom's 1977 Ford Cortina 2L automatic

Started off driving 2km to school and back (with mom in the passenger seat). A few months later I went along to Adderley Street on a Friday afternoon and mom stopped the car, hopped out and told me to park in a parking garage 500m away. I nearly had a heartattack.

My mom's Mitsubishi Starwagon to do pull-offs, then instructor's Mazda 323. And then another instructor's car, Corsa Lite.
I eventually passed out on my first car, 2007 Opel Corsa Club, which I still have.
