Fear of death.

I always figured that would have the opposite effect.

Complacency, apathy, indifference and all those wonderful states of mind I'd definitely attribute to causing (or at least contributing to) laziness. But a good solid fear of death? Never :p

@ Randux, I'd suggest finding a friend, giving them a whip, signing away your rights and permitting them to provide you with some incentive :)

Lack of love, leading to moral flabbiness and weakness of will.

It is not a problem of the intellect, so cannot be solved by knowledge. It is a disease of the will.

Its when your energy is being directed elsewhere. So perhaps emotional baggage, fear, low self esteem, loss of hope etc. When you start patching up the holes in your life, you suddenly find that your energy levels increase.
It could also be physiological. Go get a Vitamin B shot and get outside and do some exercise.

+1 I can believe this.

I go through these stages in my life where I suffer from laziness or lack of motivation to the point where I don't see the point of getting out of bed in the morning. Then other times I'm productive, organised and well...exercising. Laziness for me is where I fall into a rut, I comfortable rut that stops me from achieving any positive progress in my life but not to the point that I feel the need to do anything about it...until it does get to that point and I force myself to be motivated and will myself on before I hit the next rut.

So should one seek psychological help or will himself into doing what needs to be done at that particular time?
For me I don't do anything on time I delay and delay until the work piles up or I don't do it at all. I'm impatient always looking for shortcuts or I do a half decent job (if I'm forced to do it) thus not doing it to my full potential. This thing is holding me back and I don't know how to address it. :-(

It's a character fault that has to do with upbringing. I'd like to generalise and say that it's the fault of parents, but I know some exceptions to that rule both positively and negatively. Importantly though, it's nearly impossible to root out once it's embedded in a person.

Modern inventions and technology generally lend their purpose to that act of laziness.
