What courier companies think of South Africa's new lockdown rules

South Africa's COVID-19 alert level 4 restrictions will continue to impact businesses severely, including sectors which operate with minimal human contact.

Courier companies, ecommerce businesses, and logistics operators have all been impacted negatively by the lockdown, and there will be little change from level 5 to level 4 for these companies.

Most countries AFAIK made postal and delivery services critical, not that they had to deliver critical goods, but crtical in the sense of needing to continue to deliver.

SA, just had to be different and take it a step too far :(

“Let’s open the golf courses. It’s easy to physically distance while playing golf”. Or “We need to allow e-commerce because it’s easy to socially distance when you deliver goods to my house”. Or “Let’s open the drive-through takeaways because I don’t need to get close to anyone when I get my order.”

I’ve heard all of these and more. And for some people, these comments betray them. Because they only see the “front end” of all these worlds that they imagine just magically happen.

They arrive in their private car at their country club to play a round of golf and they do physically distance. But they don’t see the crowded greenkeeper’s changing room where the small army of mowers, rakers and gardeners get changed. They don’t think of the public transport the caddies will have to catch to get to the club a few hours before they do. The same goes for the kitchen and bar staff. They don’t see the coronavirus spreading between all these people.
They put in an order online, and a few days later it is delivered to their door. They don’t see the minimum wage labourers in the warehouses that have to pack their boxes. They don’t see the minimum factory workers who make the goods they ordered, nor the truck drivers who take it from factory to warehouse and on to the courier company. They don’t see the coronavirus spreading between all these people and going home to their families too.
They drive in their private cars to the takeaway restaurant and pull up to the window. They don’t look behind that window to the kitchen staff, who are sweating and cramped together in the tiny kitchen. They don’t see the cleaning staff or delivery drivers or warehouse staff or the labourers all the way back to the farm suppliers who form a long chain of human contact, each one spreading the coronavirus.
We don’t need to see these people behind the scenes as we go about our normal daily lives. But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
So, please try and remember that for every little thing you feel you want to have access to right now, even if YOU are safe and the front end of that activity looks sanitised to YOU, there is a whole team of people who are much more at risk who will need to work hard to make it possible. Lockdown is about those people as much as it is about you.
I am not saying we shouldn’t open up the economy, bit by bit. All I am saying is that it is not as easy as it looks, and affects a lot more people than you probably imagine. I am not saying these low wage earners wouldn't be really grateful to earn some money (I hope their employers have been paying them anyway). But I am saying that their health and safety should be as much of a concern to you as yours is. Please consider all those people and not just yourself.

Pfff Automotive is not even on Level 4 so God knows when we are going back to work. The manager just sent everyone a message to say we are awaiting clarity on when we will return to work.... :cautious:

This is one of my main issues with how the lockdown is being handled. Every time something gets announced they say details to follow. Just figure it out on time. The schools announcement was delayed twice.

Edit: Had the wrong article.

Automotive manufacturing, including components, can scale up in phases to 50% employment, and the same applies for stationery production, as well as cement, construction materials and hardware.

Why is Ram so expensive to ship goods? I just got parcel delivered by Ram today excellent service they promised to deliver today and they did that
I was offered hands sanitizer immediately and driver and assistant drive were both wearing face mask & hands gloves so Ram is following regulations on that note salute,
But why do Ram charge R250 for standard courier services if i want to ship something from east coast to inland province is R250 even if i want to ship something from Gauteng to North West is still R250

The industry term is minimums. Couriers don't normal run that high though, very cut throat. Break bulk shippers is probably close.

Yeah Auto Body repairs do not fall under manufacturing unfortunately so I don't know.

I cant understand the curfew?
There may be a very valid reason .... I just dont get it.

We have it in the county north of us, a curfew from 11pm to 5am, but to what end?

In our county, after 10pm, a whole bunch of people are found cleaning outside and inside the shops, the carts, the restaurants, public benches and stops.

Does the virus come out after a certain time like a vampire?
Are the fence hoppers and petty thieves aware they are not allowed to steal during the curfew?
Do you HONESTLY believe the municipal workers will be out cleaning during curfew?
The SAPS sleep during working hours, so do they sleep better during curfew?
Surely couriers are moving goods cross country at this time ......

Or, is this a case of the SA Stalinist League government taking it a step too far, yet again?

Try looking at a quote from these guys next time, service has always been good for me.

I have had TERRIBLE service from them multiple times. The last time was after paying R800 for same-day delivery of a passport. They phoned me at 5pm to ask if they can deliver the next day! I refused and it eventually arrived at 11pm.

For online bookings I now use Courier Guy thru the Rush App. https://www.rush.co.za/

Think it is safe to say most have gone from "ok, Cyril's got this" to "classic clueless ANC screwing everybody over".

You also Durban - no i've had great service from them, Both delivery + collection

Takalot just delivered my package. The driver was wearing a mask, but just got out of the car, and handed the box to my father-in-law. No putting it down or anything like that.

You think that's bad? I ordered hand sanitizer from a company that makes cleaning supplies. It was delivered by their own delivery vehicle, handed to me, and I had to sign papers with their pen. Not a drop of hand sanitizer in sight!
