What device to get?

My screen only has 1 x HDMI input, 1 x S-video input and 1 x optical audio input.

However, I have 2 x HDMI devices, 2 x S-video devices and 3 x optical audio devices that I need to receive signals from. At the moment I am plugging and unplugging when I use the different devices.

What single device will handle the switching? Do I really need to spend as much as R5000 to R10 000 on an AV receiver or is there a cheaper device that can take all the above inputs and handle switching for me?

AV receiver sounds like the way forward, unless you want to keep on pluggin devices in/out as you use them.

A good option but a cheaper alternative would be a HDMI switcher with remote.

Sure if one googled it a bit more could be found.

Thanks. I have been considering an HDMI switch + optical switch + av splitter as a fall back option. The negative is that it means 3 devices, two of which are manual without the ability to be remote controlled. The positive is that it is cost effective at R500 + R200 + R300 = R1000. Don't know why they can't manufacture an all-in-one device for like R1500 with remote control. Have googled but nothing seems to exist (other than an AV receiver at R5000 plus) - there must surely be a demand for a basic cost-effective all-in-one switcher.

I had a similar question a few months a ago and one of the users pointed me to his site, which was filled with all kinds of AV/HDMI splitters, etc at reasonable prices. Maybe try searching for HDMI splitter on this site and have a look at what comes up? Sorry couldn't be of more help.

I have never purchased from them but have called them before. Staff seemed friendly but was not to clued up on my technical query but said they would get the brains who was out in the field to call me back. He called back less than 10min later and answered my questions to satisfaction.

milano: what components have you got? It's 5 audio and 6 video devices, right?

EDIT: don't get your hopes up - I'm just curious. Oh, and I'm not sure how many AV receivers in that price range you will find with 3 optical inputs...

I have the following components:

HD-PVR = HDMI and Optical Audio outputs
PS3 = HDMI and Optical Audio outputs
Sony HDD Recorder = S-Video and Optical Audio outputs
Tivo PVR = S-Video and RCA Audio outputs
SD-PVR = S-Video and Optical Audio outputs (Willing to compromise and just use RF + RCA here)

(My HDMI goes directly to the screen so just used for video signal, therefore I use the optical for audio to my amp)
