What does Telkom 4mb/10mb upgrade to 10mb actually mean for consumers?

Telkom's upcoming upgrade of all ADSL lines indicates that the current 4mb/10mb will be upgraded to 10mb.

It was my understanding the previous service guaranteed a minimum speed of 4mb but your line would sync anywhere up to a maximum of 10mb. Now after the upgrade your line will still sync up to 10mb. So what will actually change?

My 4mb/10mb line usually sync's at around 6.5mb. It would be great if I could actually get closer to 10mb but I'm not holding my breathe as I'm pretty sure my current speed restriction is due to my physical distance to my Telkom exchange box which isn't going to change... :erm:

Previous service was syncing at 4mbps, but you could request for it to sync higher than that, up to 10mbps.
Now it'll try sync at 10mbps by default, and only lower when it can't maintain a connection that that sync rate.

Also a big part of the upgrades is that alot of DSLAMs are being upgraded to handle 10mbps now, where up till now they couldn't.

Sad for you. My exchange was upgraded to 10mb from 4mb, so I hope I would see a difference,

Best I can get from my exchange ATM is 6Mbps which will only improve with the MSAN roll out in my area next year (so I'm told :whistling:).

Due to the above constraint I have a TI 4Mb uncapped account which will drop from R369/mth to R249/mth in Dec so there is a small saving to made if you're in the same position.

What are your line stats?

I thought the same thing, my downstream is 41.5 dbm, and it's rock solid on 10.

Can someone help, I'm currently on a 4mb line and account. My exchange is literally down the road from where I stay. According to Telkom the max available speed is 4mb. Why? Is it that the exchange is not capable of 10mb? the exchange is CAMBRIDGE (NAHOON VALLEY PARK) (ECM+04). According to broadbandstats.co.za its 10mb enabled but max adsl is 4mb. What does that mean? My line attenuation is 12.5db and noise margin 16.5db. On Telkom's adsl checker the max speed according to my line is 4mb but my current line speed is 10mb but I ordered 4mb bcos thats the highest they said I could get. My router is syncing at 4mb. Can I request a higher sync crate?

My line is upgraded to 10 Mbps but my exchange is physically unable to offer me that speed, even if my UMC is fed with an STM-1 cable so this is my stats for now:

Operational Mode G.Dmt.BisPlus
Annex Type AnnexA
Upstream 511800
Downstream 4092800
SNR Margin(Upstream) 35.5 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 35.25 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 2.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 9.0 dB

My downstream is about 6700kbs with 49.5 dbm. I'm at the end of a deadend street so I guess I'm just far from the nearest Telkom "box".

The beauty of syncing at 10Mb is that you get a 1Mb upstream rate, whereas at the lower sync rates you are stuck at 512kb up. It makes a significant difference if you need to upload stuff.

My upload speed syncs at 1024kb while my download is only at 6.5mbs...
I know you are capped at 512kb on the "faster" ADSL telkom line

Nothing unless you're exchange has been upgraded to support 10Mbps

So if you are currently only getting 4Mbps you most likely won't be getting 10Mbps until your exchange is upgraded.

Telkom is simply restructuring their ADSL packages.

Very good question! I had a 4Mb/s line until yesterday when my router started syncing at just over 5Mb/s. Now the exchange is apparently good for 10Mb/s, but I'm too far away to get anything like that speed. What the 4-10 "upgrade" means for me (and I suppose quite a lot of others) is that because I have a capped TI account (20 + 20 promotional), I either have to pay the same for a very marginal speed increase or downgrade to a 4Mb/s account which is bundled with only half that amount of data. Needless to say, my feelings are not quite in line with the very positive impression that I got when the upgrade announcement was made.

The same problem I have here with the capped account, but I am also stuck on 4 megs even though other houses in the area get 10.

Instead of dropping to 10 gb account we may as well go uncapped for R6 cheaper than what I pay for 4/10 account :p.

Don't let the "Bundle" pricing mislead you, there's nothing preventing you from downgrading your line and keeping your 20+20 capped account, you'll still get a discount and finish up paying less (how much less I'm not sure).
