What does the actual fibre to home network setup look like

Hi

I currently have ADSL (I know .. poor me), and fibre is coming to my area in the next 4 to 6 weeks, so I'm getting into prep mode.

I have an ADSL router, that acts as a modem on my network, and a Shorewall Linux firewall that establishes a pppoe session. In its simplest form, this manifests as a WAN IP and a number of internal IP's on the each adapter on the firewall. Obviously now, routing is simple, as the WAN IP is not inside the private IP range, so I don't really need to care about my internal IP range. I also have a Unifi AC Pro, so wireless is not a concern for my configuration, as its managed external to the ADSL router.

The problem is, I really have no idea (until it arrives) how the fibre network actually looks, or connects, so I'll lay down a few assumptions, and maybe someone with a bit of knowledge and some first hand experience can confirm / deny / swear at my horrible logic.

I assume, after the installation, that I am provided a cat5 interface inside my house. I also assume that plugging an ethernet cable into this port, and plugging the other end of this cable into my laptop, will result in a dhcp handshake, and an IP assignment. I also assume the IP assignment will be an internal IP (which may or may not conflict with my current ranges). Perhaps this assumption is nonsense, and I get a WAN IP on that adapter, in which case, I'm really good to go...

Could someone clarify how the actual connection to the fibre network looks so I can start to plan :)

Shotto

Right .. thanks for that .. I assumed fibre didnt use PPPoE .. I thought it was a straight NAT, and I was going to have to beg for things like port forwards ...

I have fatpipe already, and its great .. Im expecting some issues, and probably a price increase to switch from DSL to fibre .. but I have the original 159 rand fatpipe, that is now 400GB capped unshaped, if I have to get a new fatpipe .. so be it .. but my experience with Vox has been great

Ill be sticking with VOX through Octotel
Yip then it will be PPPoE

Im on a 100meg with vox and it's PPPoE

Some do DHCP so in that case your setup would be the same as I posted originally but instead of PPPoE it's DHCP on the wan interface

Perfect, no change then .. I should be able to put in the new credentials and go ..

In other words, a mess. Mine looks worse :(

Damn thats bad. Vuma install is nice and clean. They have a CPE inside the house that the fibre goes in to, then just ethernet to your router from the CPE.

I guess in all fairness the install can be cleaned up. The particular install is located inside a cupboard and it works. The picture was taken directly after the install and not sure of if the cables were tied back.

The picture is off another install. I have a Megafibre install inside a rack.
