What does WBS shape?

What does WBS shape with regards protocols that we can and cannot use.

I have had a look at all the possible wording that I could find, but am still at a loss as to what we can and cannot do with our allocated bandwidth.

The reason I ask is because I have bought a bulk e-mail system that I will be using to send out monthly newsletters to all my clients and on install it has given me two options with regards sending the mails - either via a stipulated SMTP server that I need to assign or via a built in SMTP server (which they do not recommend due to firewall settings and the settings of certain ISP's - to do with port 25).

The same question would apply to a verifier system that I have also purchased to test if the clients mail addresses are still current. When I run the system it keeps informing that the SMTP check has timed out (this prgram allows me to use a proxy server - however I am not clear on how these work either).

My concern is that we are already forced to use their (WBS') SMTP server.

How will this affect me and what settings will I be allowed to stipulate?

Well .. neither of the methods above will work...

It's not that they shape smtp ... it's that they BLOCK smtp.

You simply will not be able to use the software as stipulated unless the company that sold you the software provides a NON-STANDARD port for their smtp server for you to use ... ie instead of connecting to "stipulated SMTP server":25 connect to "stipulated SMTP server":2525 ... This requires them to configure this so I don't expect that to work.

The iBurst service is simply not geared for such use...

As to shaping ... that's a different story ... on any package but the 9gb package p2p is basically dead... form what I can see this has been implemented by limiting the number of simultaneous tcp sessions (easiest way to kill p2p btw).

Other than that only pop3,imap,smtp,dns,http,https,ssh,vpn seems to really run at full speed.

It is so simple for them to change this list that I guess no-one will know for sure unless wbs actually officially post their shaping details....yeah right

Yep sucks for me ... ~100kbps. Locals getting back to normal but not quite there yet.

Still missing the 'Burst' in my iBurst ... left with a little 'i'

Have you tried using SSL to send mail? I managed to bypass WBS smtp that way.

I tried that with Outlook and it worked for a while, but for some reason gave me problems so I went back to using iDeflate's SMTP settings.

It also does not give me an option to use SSL settings on either of these programs.

Is there no way we can force WBS to come clean on what we can and connot do with our connection? I would have thought that given the fact that we are paying for a service that we at least have clarifcation on the limitations as this could assist a client in the decision making process before they sign up.

International via UUNET on their Maimi link is running errors ... this has been an issue since 23 Nov on the UUNET page but has still not made it onto the WBS page ... they are supposed to fix the line errors today some time
