What else to try?

I live in Craigavon, and have been trying to get decent speeds with IBurst. Here is what I have tried so far:

Bought a directional antenna. Loaded uTraceStar, and hunted throughout my house for the best signal. Then "mounted" the antenna. Best I got was -72db connecting to Olivedale.

Played with my MTU, have tried a whole bunch of settings, rebooting in between.

Tried a bunch of speed test sites, and I average around 30Kbs.

What else can I try?

I get on average a 145ms ping from www.iburst.co.za, varying from 50ms to 271ms.

Im connected to the Olivedale tower, and im around 5km away. Even though im in Craigavon, I cannot see the Fourways tower at all.

mmmh, i think the distance is a problem, have you tried putting the antenna in the roof, you must see if you can connect to fourways.......

I am in Bloubosrand, and the best I get (on average) according to utTracestar is -91db. That is with the antenna located on an antenna pole on the roof. I too cannot see Fourways Tower.

And what sort of download speeds do you get?

Average 180kbps download (the term "cr@p" springs to mind here)

It doesn't matter how good your link to Iburst, you need to use a multi-thread download manager to get consistent >120KB/s download speeds from local or international sites. Single thread downloads seldom get above 80KB/s and average closer to 40KB/s. Unfortunately most speed test sites only measure single threaded downloads.

I use NetTransport with the Flashgot plug-in for Firefox and I really can't complain about download speeds.

My 30KB/s is with a multi threaded download manager. Each thread reports like 3-10 KB/s.

Are there any better arials other than the one from iBurst? Will it even help?

Then you really do have a problem. Is it like that at all times of the day and night. Or just specific times?

I also have -72db signal, and I'm 7km from the Randburg BS. with LOS. But I get fairly consistent pings of 50-100ms. Before I moved my modem to an upstairs outside wall, I also experienced a very patchy signal, and poor download performance. Assuming there is no problems with Olivedale BS, you may just need to find the sweet spot. See if you can get a long ethernet cable and try different modem locations.
