hi guys

Im trying to find out if a Legend 7900gtx(R2999) 512mb is better than a xfx 7900gt 256mb(R2599) I know that besides the legend having a more ram which should equate to better performance but Im just not sure about the Legend branding is it a quality product ???

thanks

i would go for the legend

yes you can overclock the xfx, but why it should run all your games on highest settings without need to overclock

provided you have a good cpu mb ram etc

remember the xfx is only a gt not a gtx

i have a legend 6600 gt not quite as good as the one your looking to buy
i also thought hmmmm wonder if they are good.

i think they are awesome :)

I don’t think you can get the 7900GTX 512meg for R2999, I think that would be the GT (I could be wrong here).

From what I have been told there is no speed difference between the 512meg and 256, but I haven’t found a review to substantiate this claim.

You should however be able to get the XFX Extreme for R2599, which runs at 520/750, which is quicker than the 450/650 legend.

One other thing, there are no sites that give reviews of legend cards, from what I understand they are only sold in SA and Aus. - does anybody have more info regarding this?

Well i just checked XFX's 7900 GTX is R5600 at sybaritic and if the legend 7900 GTX is R2999 then you can probably see who is the better provider (XFX) but on those two that you are deciding on i'd say that you should go with the LEGEND cos its a GTX not a GT and its got more RAM.

My prsonal opinion is save up and go for the XFX 7900 GTX

Oops I just phoned the store now and the xfx 7900gt 256mb xxx edition is R2700 and the 512mb legend is a gt so which is better ?? The xfx does run at higher clock speed of 520mhz and ram speed of 1.5ghz compared to the 500 mhz , 1.3ghz of the legend ?
So which is better ??? (im mainly worried about the build quality of the legend)

More memory really only affects resolutions. So if you want to run at 1600 or higher you want the 512. If you run at the usual 1024 then 256 is plenty.

Basically the XFX is already overclocked. You can (probably) push the Legend to the same speeds (and void your warranty etc.). Depends on if you like doing that sort of stuff or not I guess. Also you would probably need to get a new cooler which would hit you for at least R250 / R300.

I wouldn't really worry about build quality on the Legend. The main bit is still made by NVidia. Legend just assemble it. It's not really rocket science so as long as they have the right machine (which they do), it should be fine. All these cards just follow the Reference Design. It will be obsolete in a year anyhow :( .

If I were you I would go for the XFX. If I were me I would go for a Gainward / Bliss card at similar prices instead.

XXX is not the same as the extreme.

There are about 5 models of XFX 7900GT's available. I know the XXX is clocked at 540mhz, and one of the extreme models is running 520mhz.

No point getting a super-high-res-capable card, if you going to run 1024x768 etc.

I used to have a X1900XT 'cos I ran 1680x1050, but didn’t really play enough games to warrant the card. Now I run a 7900GT and don’t really notice much speed difference, 'cos I don’t play the 'new' games....

then why buy an expensive card to run old games that work on a 6600gt?

Go for the XFX. i have heard so many stories of Legend cards breaking. Also 512mb over 256mb means nothing thats why you get 512mb 64bit cards so that people who know nothing will buy them just because of the 512mb. If your legend card breaks where will you take it? The Legend store?

You buy through the dealer channel, preferably through someone that'll treat you right and take care of any problems that come up ..as happens with reputable dealers with a conscience and decent set of ethics.

Legend only make 7900GT
Its the Sonic 7900GT 5612MB
Clock is 550MHz/1400MHz.
What you want with 7900s is more core clock speed than memory speed.
But having said that, the Legend 7900s are particularly flaky and are never in stock in case you have to replace it.

These cards are exactly like the Gainward 512MB GT's. Same PCb, same clocks, same everything.

Stick to the 256MB cards, they OC better than the 512MB Legend cards.
(Sparkle do have however 512MB GT's that oc like 256MB parts, so those are great)

256MB vs 512MB is not a comparison. The extra 512MB makes 0% difference in performance, be it high resolution or not.
512MB for DX9c class and lower cards is useless.

The XFX gets my vote :)

BTW: Legend is a Chinese company with Offices in OZ and SA also. They also sell in the UK (limited)
