I'm looking to buy a new hand set while abroad, and would really like advice from you guys.
I use only PAYG so cant take advantage of contract package offers on handsets.

The U700 and HTC Touch have my interest at this time and they're in my price range as well, but could squeeze a little more.
The one thing that bothers me with this device is that it does not do 3G.
I have a HSPDA data card for use with my PC, so I'm not intending to use the new device for this, but I would like to do Outlook email and tasks etc.
I would also like the new device to be able to use VOIP, Skype, Fring, ..... I haven't used Fring, but use Skype and Skype-Out daily on my PC.

I have never own a pocket PC because until now they've been a little too bulky and expensive for me, but the HTC Touch changes that.

The N95 is great, but pricey and I'm not that interested in GPS, so I feel I'd be paying for something I don't really need/want.

Thanks in advance for advice and comments.

PS. Not sure what category this should be posted in the forum - MOD please move if required.

Hi, I have a U700, its pretty cool tho i feel samsungs aren't the easiest or nicest phones to use. Also it does have 3G. If you want somethin that looks stylish and easy to carry go for the U700, tho if u want features get the HTC or the N95.

You can pick up a SonyEricsson P990i for a bargain now, best buy in my opinion.

With the latest firmware, the phone is rock-solid and a joy to use.

I'm not sure of what you can do with the U700 (fring, skype, email, etc) but it does beat the Touch when it comes to the camera 3.15MP as opposded to the 2mp cam on the Touch, the U700 has a secondary cam for videocalling and 3.6mbps HSDPA.

However, the Touch does compensate:
* MS outlook (I run multiple email acounts and it handles them well, I can set how often it should check my mail and how much data it should download per email, each account can have different settings)
* I use Fring instead of Skype, it worked okayish when I called gmail contacts.
* Touch screen+Touch FLO (the thumb/flick scrolling works on everything except games and j2me apps)
* You can download torrents
* you can choose from different internet browsers
* Wifi
...to name a few

There are a few things that piss me off though:
* the camera uses too much RAM: you cant listen to music, have an IM application running in the background, have a minimised webpage and take a photo/record a video all at the same time.
* The handsfree kit looks cheap, also sounds cheap, its not crap, but it isn't great either.
* You cant just plug the usb adapter in and expect to access your phone/memmory card automatically, you need to have activesync installed, copying files takes some time.

At the end of the day it really just depends what you want to do with your phone...

LOL... museum material!

The P990i is VERY far from it, in fact it's now a brilliant smartphone with the latest firmware update. ;)

I saw the HTC Touch this weekend. One of my friends have one. It really looks cool and the size is awesome. If it had GPS and 5MP camera with a decent Video recording I would've got myself one.

Two of my wife's clients has got U700s. My wife also wanted one but after hearing them complain about it she doesn't want it anymore. Luckily my wife is clever enough to know that Nokia is the best.

If I had to choose between al of the above I'll go for Nokia.

P990i?? Its like buying a Pentium 3 running Vista. The hardware is OLD but the software is NEW.

The P990i certainly has loads of attributes and at least all the ones I'm looking for such as WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, email, etc. , but it's a little bulky.

It sure is good value for money - I have not ruled this one out, but will keep looking for now.

Thanks.

Thanks very much for your detailed hands-on review.

So far I'm leaning towards the Touch - the only thing bothering me is that it doesn't seem to handle VOIP well.

If I dig deeper into my pocket I might consider the Touch's bigger brother HTC P3600i.

If I did go with the HTC P3600i, where can I get the SA maps for the GPS ?

They don't talk about the SonyEricsson 900 series anymore, it's a P1 now. But Nokia rules and the E90 is my next choice. I'll choose between a HTC and the E90.
