I read some threads and is seems like I have inadvertently stumbled into happy hour at Valkenberg hospital.

Has the forum become a safe space for the unhinged.?

I've been around these parts for the better part of 15yrs and I've never known the place like it is now - almost daily more lunacy appears.
For a psychologist or psychiatrist it must be like stumbling upon a funfair - where all rides are free.

Often sources quoted on thread creation are utterly obscure, one can click the link to the source, ignore the quoted content and click on the home page of that source to quickly get an idea of the batschittery that lies ahead.

The most common themes are somehow related to a new work order.
"Big Pharma" is another favorite.
Flat earthers have now been relagated to the back seats.

It's definitely true...There are some seriously crazy (ignorant) people on this forum lately. I don't even go into the Philosophical Debates section anymore...too many crazies there.

I trace the issues back to the creation of two sub-forums, the Eskom and Covid ones. In order to provide fair access, no restrictions were applied to new threads or comments. This meant that literally anyone could register, and ask a valid question (or not).

The sheer volume of posts means that the moderators are overwhelmed, and can only respond to the most blatant abuse reported to them. No attempt is made to keep posts on topic, nor to limit argumentative, incorrect answers, or trolls. The News forum used to be tightly controlled, now it's like a tabloid, and everything has a political slant.

The ignore button does help, though it is far from perfect. Some members can be highly informative in their area of expertise, but woefully misinformed about other topics. I often turn this on and off while navigating between threads on different sub-forums.

The ease of registration and anonymity means this is not likely to get much better. Like many other things, the past seemed like a simpler and safer time...

I recently suggested that a client ask here about some ancient RAM he was looking for. When I checked in after a couple of weeks he told me that he came here and bounced instantly when he saw the state of the forum. He said: "Long Ivermectin threads right at the top of the list and other weird stuff do to with Apartheid. Quotes from Hendrik or Verwoerd, ranting about CRT, etc. I'd rather not meet anyone from there. Actually I was surprised you would send me to a website like that."

I spent the next few minutes trying to save face but I'm not convinced that he won't tell other people that I'm a racist conspiracy theorist and Covid denier once he's had a couple beers one day. I'll never tell anyone I use this forum again, that much is for certain.

It's what the forum has become. The admins do not seem phased judging by the degree of inaction. In fact you can see them driving engagement by posting polls with leading questions daily. I get that forums like these thrive on advertising and that means impressions and engagement - you guys might just want to think about reach too, as in who you are reaching. Sell enough crazy and only crazies will want to advertise here.

You were calling for the banning of more than just racism though weren't you. Some countries are banning the vaccine for children now, yet if it were up to people like you you would ban that debate. Wake up, you are advocating banning free speech. Where there is risk, there must be choice.
