What happens if you don’t pay for e-tolls?

Found this gem today:

This really is infuriating. How many people do you think are ACTUALLY going to not pay? I'm starting to think that most little intimidated sheep are going to go cry to their mommies, after which they'll go get an e-tag, after which we'll have to put up with people crying about how much transport costs...

They could probably make a lot more money by just fining people for jumping red lights - that's getting worse by the day.

The middle class in South Africa are push overs! They complain and complain expecting things to get done but never try to change anything. I have the greatest respect for the lower class however misguided it may be the are willing to stand together and fight to make government and enterprises bend to their will

Oh wow that is actually so true!!!

I do hope though that this etoll saga will be the start where the middle class can finally start to stand together on issues instead of debating and moaning about them.

It's pointless fighting the government that you constantly vote into power. It's just a waste of everybody's time...

Except the lower class couldn't care since taxi's are exempt from paying.

Not if you getting what you want and they are getting what they want... the middle class is getting screwed coz government knows they can...

I've been fighting this since day one along with the info bill and my spirit was broken just seeing how people just complain yet fail to take any action. So I got myself a place down the road from work and close to a Gautrain station, so while I will still support the cause and not buy an e-tag it won't matter coz I rarely use the freeways...

Everyone should not buy tags, and then just pay if/when they receive registered letters.
The extra financial and administrative burden will crush scamrail...

They probably going to get SARS involved as well or banks and debit the amount automatically from your bank account . How can SANRAL control people using fraudulent number plates(duplicates), then this will have to challenge this at court. Wasting peoples time, money etc.

Word of advice wait for them to send you an account.

I would love to know what happens if you never receive the invoice? Are they going to send them via registered post?

You are supposed to go to one of their offices and pay even if you don't get an invoice. :D

You can register on the website, lookup your licence plate and see what you owe, then pay it via Credit Card or via the call centre.

You mean on the website where the user details are completely unprotected and exposed?

You mean the same one where some woman just had all her money deducted out of her prepaid account, even though the system isn't even live yet?

That one?

How will they educate consumers *they should have a segment on the news, all radio stations etc, billboards etc* notifying the general public what will be the consequences if you don't pay for eToll.

I feel for those who are unemployed. :(

I will be selling cloned Taxi e-tags soon, cousin..bussiness will be booming. I cnt wait , you pay once off R150 .

All of you accusing the middle class of being apathetic pushovers are in all likelihood the very class of people you're referring to. Ironic, right? Take a stand for yourself. There's no reason to wait for your neighbour to do so to follow suit. Let's not be hypocrites right?

I don't care what class of people I fall into,I can easily afford the tolls but I wont pay out of principle, and I wont stop using the highway,if sanral wants my money they can stop me at a road block thats when I will pay....until then they can keep on sending me post that i "did not receive" all they like :D

I pay my taxes and I pay my fuel levies,I wouldn't mind if they increased my fuel levies to pay for the system but as it stands now it is corrupt and inefficient, I wont support a corrupt system no matter how much threats they throw my way.

Suck it Nazir Alli you dimwit corruption supporter......wait in fact I think he knew this was coming(the **** hitting the fan when the public realized how they were being fleeced) thats why he tried to resign but the big boys upstairs that got the kickbacks from the corrupt toll system forced him to stay on.

They are the ones that are going to be hit the most.
Almost all of the middle class people are able to afford the 450 by shuffling their budgets. It sucks, I dont agree with it, but push comes to shove, we can cut a few things out to filter some finances towards this.

The lower / poor class is already living hand to mouth, with practically no spare monies. And the toll gates will increase their monthly "living" expense costs.

* The truck that delivers the petrol to the station will be tolled, and someone has to recover that money. Therefore higher taxi fares. The country didn't want a fuel levy to pay for tolls, no problem, we will now pay extra for fuel anyway to cover someone else's transport costs of delivering the fuel.

* Food prices will go up, and drastically. Remember that the goods in the shop do not travel through the toll gate only once. Raw materials are delivered to the factory, finished product is delivered to a storage facility, finished goods is bought by a DC such as SPAR or Checkers and in turn delivered to their own warehouse, and then in turn that product is delivered to the shop. YOur simple loaf of bread would have paid the toll gates 3-4 times on its way to your shop.

And that is just the start of things, I can name and number a never ending list of how this will affect not just "middle" class, but how it will actually starve off the "lower" class.

Based on the above, don't be surprised if the goods in your neighbourhood shops rise by as much as 20%. Dont be surprised if the crime rate increases because a father who previously just made the ends meet, would rather die than see his kids starve.

And you forget about the R450 now being spend on e-tolls is not being spent on something else (movie tickets? ice cream? car wash? and whatever other things are cut to accommodate the extra spending) and thus some people (like some cinema employees, some ice cream makers employees, some car wash employees) might be out of a job soon.
