What happens if you don’t pay for e-tolls?

They are the ones that are going to be hit the most.
Almost all of the middle class people are able to afford the 450 by shuffling their budgets. It sucks, I dont agree with it, but push comes to shove, we can cut a few things out to filter some finances towards this.

The lower / poor class is already living hand to mouth, with practically no spare monies. And the toll gates will increase their monthly "living" expense costs.

* The truck that delivers the petrol to the station will be tolled, and someone has to recover that money. Therefore higher taxi fares. The country didn't want a fuel levy to pay for tolls, no problem, we will now pay extra for fuel anyway to cover someone else's transport costs of delivering the fuel.

* Food prices will go up, and drastically. Remember that the goods in the shop do not travel through the toll gate only once. Raw materials are delivered to the factory, finished product is delivered to a storage facility, finished goods is bought by a DC such as SPAR or Checkers and in turn delivered to their own warehouse, and then in turn that product is delivered to the shop. YOur simple loaf of bread would have paid the toll gates 3-4 times on its way to your shop.

And that is just the start of things, I can name and number a never ending list of how this will affect not just "middle" class, but how it will actually starve off the "lower" class.

Based on the above, don't be surprised if the goods in your neighbourhood shops rise by as much as 20%. Dont be surprised if the crime rate increases because a father who previously just made the ends meet, would rather die than see his kids starve.

Terrifyingly accurate that post is.

Huh?What is this foreign thing?Pls forgive my ignorance after all i'm based out in the sticks.

They make use of 2 or more camera's. When you pass the first one it records your registration number and the time. When you pass the second one it does the same and then calculates how long it took you to drive from camera 1 to camera 2 and by doing so can work out your average speed as they know how far the camera's are apart.

The camera's are usually placed on a stretch of highway where there are no off/on ramps i.e. cars can go nowhere but forward towards the 2nd camera.

The reason why they are using this is because people learn where the camera's are and then slow down for them and speed back up afterwards. With a speed averaging system you cannot do that. Your average speed for the whole distance need to remain below the speed limit otherwise you get fined.

Its about how long it took you to cover the distance. So no use braking for a camera and then speeding up.

Thinking of it, the gantries on the toll roads are actually ideal places to place these speed averaging camera's (if not already in place)......

Guess that will be the next thing to generate some more revenue.

Oh, FFS,the authorities are really out to bleed us dry.F**k it!!! Yerr one of the reasons I moved back to the sticks from Jo'burg, it was a constant pay pay pay till i went to sleep and a repeat the following days/weeks/months/years. Thanx for that MKFrost.

The tech behind the camera's on those gantries is actually extremely sophisticated. At even very high speeds, they will have the ability to read not only your numberplate but your car's license disk as well.

Scamral should have binned the eTolls and simple gone ahead with speed limit enforcement, and, something we'd all love, enforcement of the law that says keep left. Would love to see those huge trucks being forced to stay to the left.

Ok.Is there a detector to thwart this menace?

Don't be an idiot. Average speed cameras would get a lot of support.

We're forced to use the highways. Backroad will become gridlocked and this, SANRAL twist our arms into submission and we have no choice but to pay.
However, with the speed cameras we can avoid paying by not speeding! Just stick to the speed limit and you will be fine. If you're that chop in a clapped out UNO who wants to do 160 all the way to work - then you need to be fined. Simple.

You getting so upset over speed camera tells me you're one of those chops... slow down, pay less. It's simple.

I saw a thread here the other day, some bloke wanted to make a bakkie mounted targeted EMP weapon to kill the gantries?

Quite a complicated process, and short timelines - i reckon i will drive a tolled road just to add to the volume these guys need to process.

Why am being an idiot with my money when clearly this is entrapment by the authorities, you are the idiot that want's to succumb to this extortion.Bloody hell, we don't purposefully go out to break the law or the speed limit.Damn it!!

You break the speed limit by accident?

I hope i'm never on the same road as you.
