Yes, tecnically you get disconnected but the system refreshes rather quickly and most downloads and goodies either continue or reconnect as normal. This depends on the operating system, the download assistant you are using etc... There are ways of limiting the loss if it should interfere with a download. It is a good idea to use a download manager like Gozilla when downloading. It just continues the download after the connection is re-established...
