What happens when you try to use IE8 to download IE11. Microsoft tells you your browser is out of date. Duh, that's why I'm trying to update it. You have to use Firefox to download the IE11 update. (Fortunately you can download Firefox using IE8).

If you are wondering why I even bother, I have to set up this computer for an elderly person, and you just know they are going to try and use Internet Explorer to go onto the Internet.

Yup I feel your pain... just be careful the Microsoft fanboys will be here to inform you that your problem is your inability to use the OS

:crylaugh: thanks for that, ArtyFrootLoop, but this is obviously not related to that.

Good on you for finding the browser button again today, though.

Does Windows Update not update IE as well? Not sure that's why I'm asking
Yes, it does, I think. But you have to manually select that update. It's not automatic.

Also, I'm trying to do this as one of the first things in setting up the laptop, because I want to set up all his links and logins.

Insulting people you don't know on the net, or whom didn't even refer to you is always classy. Looking at where you live though... whoo... not surprised at all I am..

Yes, you clearly know me now.

Now move along, you have some repeats to catch up on.

Thanks! But IE8 still won't open those sites. Gives the same error message. But you can pretty much go anywhere else on the Internet with IE8.
Politics and manipulation. Microsoft wants you to enable automatic updates which for obvious reason you don't want...

So, no, no, no. Congratulation, Microsoft. No updating IE8, unless you use third-party browser!

Assuming you are running Win7 SP1, there is a list of prerequisite updates (Warning: some will add MS Telemetry):
The following table lists the prerequisite updates for Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1). You must have the following updates installed before you can install Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

2729094
2731771
2533623
2670838
2786081
2834140

Optional updates for Internet Explorer 11:

2639308
2888049
2882822 - Update adds ITraceRelogger interface support
These numbers are KBxxxxx...
