I got one just for the heck of it. And one of the new Gears when I found a serious special. My cardboard was a dodocase, and it was fine. Probably best to get the official Google kit at any given time since the newest ones have half decent lenses. I can tell you this. Be sure to have a beefy phone if you intend to play games or even 3D feature movies. Even my current Galaxy S6 is not quite there anymore as far as requirements go. That's just my experience, and my phone is not stuffed up with a zillion background apps. I actually keep it fairly tidy. Maybe I just have some other issue with the phone who knows.

I first had one of the cardboard things from some local company.
It was fine but also not really. Light leaks through the edges, you need to hold it in place and focus not the greatest.

Galaxy Gear VR is 1000 times better for many many reasons but obviously only works on Samsung devices. Have a look around there are likely plenty for sale 2n'd hand due to the giveaways samsung did.

I found some cheapy sets at HiFi corp a few months ago for R20. I thought I had hit the jackpot, but I was later disappointed. I just could not focus properly. Something more pricier with some sort of adjustment might be better than a budget cardboard set I think.

It's ok I have one, but cardboard is only a platform, this is what you should get now if going with google:

Daydream is great, but you need one of the supported phones. Not something really for the budget user IMO.

I've been checking those out but won't work 100% on a Note 4 without hacking, need S6 and above.

So the cheapie generic cardboard/vr come with rubbish lenses so just a straight waste of money?

Buy one of the plastic ones, make sure it can focus and looks quality, check the lenses are not too small and that it darkens/covers your eyes completely so no light gets in then you should be ok for note4.

Something like this may work, but look for reviews etc.

No point buying without someone elses opinion.
