What is a reasonable price for trucking a car from Pretoria to Cape Town?

Have a 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero in mind. Friend in Jhb gives it the thumbs-up

On the phone, the dealer stated R5300 for shipping. The pro-forma invoice includes R9500 for transport, R3500 for on-the-road fees, R2200 for "sealing" (?), R1800 for "non-Gauteng number plates", R1900 for licence transfer and inter-province registration and R1500 for sundries

Trying to figure which of those figures are legit and which are padding

get them to send the car to you and do everything yourself
friend paid R2700 or something last weekend

its normally between 2700-4500 but i think you need to get a friend to collect and drop off and the depot for you for transport

None of those. Dealers are not selling that many cars, negotiate for none of those fee's.

I bought a standard pre owned polo sedan from a Toyota dealer in PE. Was like 135k. They delivered to my nearest Toyota dealer of choice in GP and they reimbursed me for the licencing this side. Was all included in on road fees of 4.5k. Usually I don’t pay for these but considered it reasonable this time considering there was an actual delivery. OP, the almost 10k they charging you sounds like day light robbery. Negotiate hard.

They won't just send the car. A bit of an argument with the dealer as he tried to tell me those fees were "industry standard"

I told him I would buy elsewhere. He calls me on Saturday and has reduced the vehicle price by R12000. Still not interested, I now do not trust them

The industry got away with these charges all along and now it is industry standard.
Those costs looked heavily padded. R1500 sundries on a car sale?
I've heard reasonable numbers around R3 000 - R3 500 when a friend enquired between Johannesburg and Cape Town.
R9 500 sounds like they trying their luck.

I'm glad they lost the sale and hopefully people will walk away more and more because of these fees, so that the industry is forced to change.

The more people vote with their money on these charges the better. A while ago I inquired about a VW Up! at a CMH dealer. The on road and delivery charges they quoted amounted to14k. Totally non negotiable and they said they price the car very low and therefore have mandatory charges. I laughed and walked away.
