A WUG is a wireless network built by a community of people, for their own private use. Different Wugs have different ways of doing things, but in general it is free to join (you must just pay for your own equipment) and nobody "owns" it. Anybody can help build the network, and everyone can be involved in planning and implementing the network.

The benefit is a 24/7 connection to a large network of people, so all the following is available, for free:
Gaming, be it Call of Duty, Dota or tetris (yup, there is a network version of tetris)
VoiP, you can chat with anyone else on this network
File Sharing, an obvious lure for lots of people
Learning to manage a network, if you are interested in that
Experimenting with new technology, like playing with Mikrotik's new NV2 protocal, the new Ubiquity Airmax hardware, etc.
General community entertainment, Wugs often have events where members meet up and do things, like action cricket, paintball, etc.

Please note that most Wugs do not offer internet, as that costs lots of money and requires licenses from ICASA. (nothing stops you from setting up a VPN to your buddy and share an ADSL account, but that is your problem)

We'll even with near perfect LOS , the theoretical speed can differ from 0.1KB up to 2.5MB+ ( Telkom Talk would be 0.8kb up to 20mb+ ) , but there are so many factors to count in that you can not give a 100% statement as to an exact speed , for instance a single tree can reduce you speed, multiple connections on the same frequencies at one location will also reduce the speed, there are to many factors to count and they all contribute to either speed lost or gained.

Depending on how much work you do on your node, and how active you are in building the network in your area, you can expect anything form 50KB/s to 5MB/s. If your connection, or the sector you connect to is bad your speeds will be bad. It is your own responsibility to learn about WiFi, get help, get guidance, and fix your link.

Lets say you buy a single antenna kit, and connect to a sector with 5 other users on it, you should get 50KB/s, with speeds up to 1MB/s when the other users on the sector are less active and the sector is running well (not allot of noise in the area, etc)

But, if you work hard to find people in your area, and you put up grids to each of them, and they put up grids to others, etc, you can easily get 3MB/s over one grid. But do keep in mind, when you take this approach, you are not "alone" and traffic passes through your node to others, so not everything is there for you to use yourself. However, if someone close to you has a file you should get really good speeds. It all depends on how far you are willing to go with your setup :)

Safe to say, if you work hard on your connection, it will reward you.

Was wondering where our local troll had disappeared to.
If you're going to troll a channel, expect to get banned. People join #jawug to ask questions and get answers, not get an update on the latest 4chan memes from a bored troll such as yourself.

Currently WUG stands for a Wireless Users Group. In future, as discussed in detail the other night in #ctwug when the 'evolution of the WUG' topic came up, the name could still change to Wired Users Group. Wired Cat6 connections to all your neighbors with small jumps over roads going over wireless.

Eish, mens mag mos droom... :)
