JHB zoo is well maintained and a pleasure to go to. I was just wondering what PTA zoo was like. Is it worth making the trip out there?

Does the cable car still run?

Go to your local primary school.

You'll see many Parrots (they just repeat but never learn),
Hippos (they just eat and **** the whole place full),
Hyenas (if kids laugh like hyenas in my presence again I'll stomp them like an Elephant would),
Snakes (slithering troublemakers start very young with the help of their parents)
And Buffalo (they know they can dictate things and they try to dictate things ... because of their political weight ... but in the end the always get eaten by the Lions)

Thanks everyone- good to hear it isn't falling apart.

Definitely isn't. We were there a couple of months ago and it was quite pleasant and impressive. Just try and avoid the popular times if possible as it gets quite busy.

I took my sister and her kid there about 6 months ago and the place was dirty as hell. Especially if you go up via the cable car. Seems a lot of people drink on the mountain and leave their **** there. Hopefully it's cleaner now.

I've been to PTA recently and its far superior to the JHB zoo.

Also the animal park on the edge of Hartebeespoort dam is also pretty good. It was bad a while ago but they have upgraded it a lot and while its smaller than PTA its got a lot of nice animals and birds to see. Kids love both of those places. Hartees is less pram friendly though. PTA zoo has some nice kiddie cars you can rent for the day which help a lot.

I found PTA zoo more pleasant for the animals (the enclosures seemed nicer), but I also saw less animals for the same reason.
Still a nice day out, although i found parking to be a bit crap

I prefer Kruger National Park - there you will see real animals.

Was there twice in the past couple of months, thought it was quite nice. Was lazy the first time, so hired a golf-cart, the "queueing" system for the carts left a bit to be desired (had to intervene TWICE otherwise people who came after others would have got their carts first. But otherwise was nice.

They are busy upgrading it, so I think that is a good sign that not all it's budget is going for unnecessary trips and overpriced parties.

The only downside for me is the parking, if you go when it's busy (fortunately we didn't), you will have to park across the road, and it's not exactly in the best part of town. Both times we managed to get into the main parking next to the entrance.

True story!

I heard that the animals in the zoo's died in 1997 and were subsequently replaced by cheap chinese immitations.

So instead of Rhino's - we have Lhino's etc.

They have some workers lying in the grass shaking it for the tourists.

Wasn't sure if I should revive this thread or make a new one so don't throw stuff at me pls :D

Anyone been to the pretoria zoo more recently?

I was thinking of going there with the kids. Where's the parking exactly? Is it part of the zoo or do you have to park at a parking garage or something.

And does anyone know which days are the quietest, saturday or sunday?

TIA

stevov,

I was there just over a week ago, but early in the morning so it was quiet. As it got later, people started arriving, not quiet in droves, but was a fair amount of people.

There is parking just next to the entrance, but it fills up quickly as there is not much space, there is then overflow parking across the road with security and everything.

Can't really say which day specifically is quieter, think this weekend is going to be busy on either day.

Ate the pie at lunch, lucky for you! :D
