I think the best deal at the moment is a new Renault sandero expression with aircon.

R130 000

5 year warranty
30 000km service plan

Try this

You will have to do your own research on NCAP ratings, if any, and parts availability, but it's a start.

It's between the Figo and Sandero. Best to organise a drag race between the two and decide from there.

I bought a two and a half year old Hyundai Accent for R128k. Had done 32k km, and bought a two year extended warranty for another R4k. Hyundai also gave me a full five year service plan from the date I purchased the car, free of charge.

It makes 91kw, and I manage to average around 5.6l per 100km.

Yup! I own the 1.6 stepway and I've put 60000 on the clock in the past 2yrs and I've had no problems with mine! The 5yr/120000km warranty was a big bonus as most of your Hyundai's and such only come with a 3yr/80000 km

But then I also bought a secondhand 4yr old BMW 320d for the same price and despite some minor repairs it's served me well for the last 5 yrs.

Hyundai comes with 5yr/150 000km warranty standard

Most of these A segment cars or budget cars have a ncap rating of 4 stars. Any of these Kia Picanto, Ford Figo, Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Spark, Turbo Renault Sandero (Except for the old Sandero) would do. I would go for B segment (Light Vehicle) category which is the Honda Jazz, alternate would be Hyundai i20 both have 5 stars ncap rating.

Base VW up!

R133k iirc...

Modern; well built; made in Germany

Small but has a big car feel

Only issue is limiting 3-door layout & no standard service plan

Just afraid i might buy a problematic car

Stipulating not older than 3 years isn't necessarily going to safeguard against that. If anything, it's going to afford you an entry level, lower quality car, with less safety. If you'd like some alternative views on the matter, you might find the discussion here of interest - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...l-with-turbo-or-straight-petrol-without-turbo.

I would advise looking at a 5 - 7 year old 2.0 naturally aspirated (non turbo) Golf/Jetta 5, or if not keen on VW, a 2.0 Audi A3 (8P)/A4 (B7). You'd have plenty in pocket (around R20k) for any necessary maintenance. Many others will suggest a Honda Accord. You must just be prepared to do your homework, and read up gaining as much info as possible.

More Audi discussion on the first few pages here (read past the naysayers) - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/550775-The-Audi-Thread.

Cars that have been serviced/maintained at the dealerships will have a full service history on the system by scanning the VIN number. You can also pull all the service/maintenance info during the warranty period, regardless of where the vehicle was serviced after the maintenance plan expired. It's important to see what was claimed against warranty, and you can spot underlying mechanical/electronic issues.
