From years of fixing laptops, Dell and HP is far the most I have come across

That might be due to how common the brand is. More of them being bought=more likely to see them needing to be fixed

All of the top brands? I haven't had issues with laptops in years. I have an MSI creator and a Zephyrus 14 and both work great.

I've had an Asus for years no, and no problems to speak of (yet).

Dell: their business offerings are solid.
HP: a bit hit-and-miss - my current work laptop is a ProBook circa 2017, and hasn't skipped a beat, though.
Lenovo: the ThinkPads have really taken a nosedive the past few years. I'm still very happy with my T420s, but I wouldn't recommend one of the new ones
Asus: company bought Zenbooks for management, because they looked cool. Of the 4, one had graphics card issues, one had a failed system fan after 1 year, and one's mainboard died right out of warranty.
Apple: one colleague had a 2018 MBP 15 inch, suffered from the dreaded keyboard failure these were notorious for, and had an issue where it would have random kernel panics and restart

So ideally, there is no such thing as "the best laptop brand".

They are all rubbish. So buy the one with the longest Onsite Warranty and best after sales support.

Best value for money in the second-hand/refurb market. Unless you work in IT and really need the latest specs, pre-owned is the way to go for most people. Just buy from a trusted seller to avoid problems.

Second hand means the battery is run down and the non-replaceable SSD is also possibly worn out. That TAL deal for R15K for a new device makes sense. It's still 8GB RAM though, I'd rather get one with 16GB and future proof it for a couple of years, but for R15K I'd go with that deal for sure instead of say R9k for a second hand device.

A new battery is ~800 depending on the machine. MMC drives are only on really low end machines AFAIK and you wouldn't want one of them in any way.

We used to only get mecer laptops. Before switching to Dell.

Never had any major issues with them

We use Dell at work, no issues thus far!
