If the filter is clogged, damaged or doesn't allow air through then you'll notice loss of power or jerkiness because of incorrect air/fuel mixture. Your fuel usage will shoot up as well.

If none of those 2 signs produce in the next few days then you're all good, nothing to worry about.'

You can always remove the air filter, inspect it and re-fit it for peace of mind. They're a bit tough and can take a few knocks since it's job is just to filter out large particles from the air before sending it onwards to be burned along with fuel.
@Flywheel I listened carefully today when I was driving and picked up a small ticking sound everytime I stop and start driving again, I know usually the brakes make a sound when you stop and take off, but this is more distinct like a stone hitting the undercarriage or the parking prawl clicking into place. It seems to be happening everytime I stop (at a traffic light for example) and take off again. Could this be related to the air filter?

Could be. Check if it is not bent out of place or rubbing against another part.

Besides the visual inspection? Just drive the car, if it doesn't bahave funny and doesn't throw any lights on the dash you are good.

Yes to the second part.

I don't think so, do a visual check for something loose, it could be anything really, sound could have been there all along and you never took notice.

I'l have a look and see. I have a sneaking suspicion that it could be the battery not sitting 100% correctly in the holder and that's where the noise is coming from. Will check this weekend when my wife gets back from her work trip (did anyone say boys night?)

it depends if the filter sits on the left or the right of the engine bay in a transverse engine set up.
