Wouldn't that be for telegraphs? The ATM for Automated telegraph machine?
Ah Google
It looks like you're right.

That's it. A bit of googling found quite an interesting project where it's hooked up to an to a Raspberry Pi.

Found this while clearing out my dad's garage. Looks like an old morse code machine. It has the manufacturer "A.T.M Liverpool" printed on the one side. Not sure how old but might be quite a cool project to restore it.

Yes a Morse key, probably used by the SAR&H on the telegraph network used primarily for rail traffic control and monitoring.
Look underneath for any stamped symbols and signs of an Asset Register number.
The oldest item I have is a piece of a fossilised tree that lies in the veldt on a farm in the Karoo

Oldest issue in my collection, May 1961.

For context SA moved to the Rand (decimalisation) in Feb 1961 hence the weird "R200/100GBP" competition in the top left corner. Adjustments & what not.

It has the following markings,
Bottom: R2D and Patent no 3533/09
Front: ATM Co Ltd Liverpool
Back: 1000 + 1000 and A269
Top: U U D D (on the terminals)

Any idea on a date for when these were in use by SAR?

No not definitively. My uncle was a telegraphist before WW II.
So at least as far back as late 1930's.

Just managed to confirm the above. SAR & H were using those morse keys in 1937 when my uncle joined the railways. My cousin has her father's morse key, still in its beautiful wooden mahogany travel box.
That key made it through the war with him as he was deployed as a communications officer with the SA army throughout Africa, Egypt, ME and Italy.

I have this book:

It has the following sections:
Measurements, Areas, Solid Bodies, Arithmetic, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry, Special Functions, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Statics, Kinematics, Dynamics, Hydraulics, Heat, Strength, Machine Parts, Machine Tools, Electrical Engineering, Optics, Chemistry and Tables.

When civilization falls it's going to come in very handy (Or I could sell it for $600)
