Hi,

This is beyond me, have a nice Nokia 6680 phone, created a email
address for the phone, configured the phone this morning. Worked like a bom,
managed to send a receive email on the phone.

Lo and behold when i tried to send emails right now,

relay=196-46-162-1.gprs.vodacom.co.za [196.46.162.1], reject=553 5.3.0 Spam blocked (spamhaus.org) see:
http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=196.46.162.1

How can one rely on this service when they don't keep their IP addresses of spam lists. What
will happen when i am on the road and needs to send a email....

Wait i know, i wont be able to.....

Its a persistant problem you will find with any ISP who assigns a dynamic IP.
 
I have never experienced this problem with my normal dialup...
 
its much harder to smtp relay lots of spam on dial up.....:P or should i say a LOT slower. I also recon the IP pool for dialup is pretty massive compared to that of broadband.

From good(ish) to evil :)

Vodacom can't keep the IP's out of the list, purely because they will then have to block port 25. This means that you can't use any mail server you please, you are forced via smtp.vodacom.co.za. This may or may not be a problem for you, but I am sure either way, they will get people that will say something. Another way out is for them to declare it as a dial up range, which will in-turn, have the same effect, since some ISPs block mail that "comes" from dialups.

From my prev. work (wrote my own mail filter+DB) a mail gets "cleared" when the connection was authenticated, something like:

Received: from [1.2.3.4] ([NAT.TED.IP.ADR]) (authenticated bits=0) by dnsservername

bla bla bla

My best advise would be to either bounce this message via smtp.vodacom.co.za or get an ISP that supports AUTH and use them.

This is not such a big problem to resolve.

Firstly, what is your smtp server?

This is how it works:

Vodacom have thousands of IP addresses that get assigned to 3G and GPRS users. Every time you connect, you get one of these.

What we find is some #$%@& spam from this network-assigned address, (or have a virus doing port attacks), and the IP gets blocked at places like Spamhaus or on internal Vodacom systems. At any given time, there are less than 20 IP's blocked though.

Vodacom then need to go through a whole process to get this IP unblocked.

You can resolve this from your side by:

1) Using smtp.vodacom.co.za for your outgoing mail. Most ISP's will only ensure their own smtp server to be unblocked and won't guarantee any other IP's for smtp.

2) Disconnect and reconnect to the network. This will issue a new IP to your phone with a great probability of it not being a blocked IP.
