OK, I originally posted this in a subsection that does not appear in new posts which means I will never see the responses, so apologies but I am posting it again here....

Hey guys,

I have chatted before of the apparent suitability of our building roof to cell companies etc.

We have now been approached by yet another company called Comsol (comsol.co.za) to assist with "connecting one of their clients wirelessly". That is as much detail as I have been given. We are having a trustees meeting later to thrash this out further.

They also included a lease agreement (offering R1500 per month) and pictures of what they are looking to install.

What is this? What are we dealing with? If they did not have our roof where would they install this? (ie what are we saving them?)

I am heading into this meeting later and want to get some info by then if possible.

Cheers

EDIT : Oh yeah, and as a result of not really knowing what this is yet I put it in this sub forum. We can move it once I do know.

First of all, R1500 for a WISP high site is more than what we are used to paying in this part of the world. Somebody will have something to say about how much money they are paying for a site rental and try and start a flame war, but the most we pay for any site is R750 a month. Most of our sites are between R500 and R600 a month.

The relatively high rental by my standards tells me that these guys aren't going to connect just one client...which means they've probably got plans to make the roof look like a porcupine. They've probably also got plans to sublet.

The first thing you guys need to do is to tie the company down in terms of the number and height of the masts as well as the number and size of the antennas.

Remember, any mast higher than 5m needs an environmental impact assessment.

If it's one client they're connecting there should be two antennas. One's pointing to the client and one's pointing to them.

Clipboard021 looks like Motorola Canopy backhaul kit.

Clipboard03 is a pretty standard microwave dish. It could be any frequency, 2.4GHz, 5GHz, 15GHz, etc.

Clipboard04 looks like a 2.4GHz or 5GHz integrated unit. ie. Radio / Router and antenna all in one.

EXCELLENT! Thanks man!

The guy I spoke to mentioned the 5Ghz frequency range. They also stated that their usual price is around R800 and they would normally pay up to R4000 for a 360 degree multi user (?) site. The originally offered us R1500 but we are pushing for R2000 which looks like it may happen.

We will need to ensure that the contract clearly specifies the number of antenna and dishes etc. It already crossed my mind that without this they will have free reign to do as they please.

Probably has something to do with being a tall block of flats with only one other block as tall in the vicinity. They are probably saving by only needing to install one because of the far line of sight available rather than three or four points if they did not use us.

Make sure then when the job is completed that it is neat & tidy , all rubbish is removed
Nothing more frustrating than poor workmanship with wires lying loose on
the ground, poorly mounted cabinets. They look like a professional organization.
But never judge a company by its website alone.

A friend of mine had a local WiSP and on one high site in Mossel Bay, the newer wireless tenant stick his grid in front of an existing installation.

Wires lying loose on the floor (no conduit secured to the floor) batteries stuck in Mr Plastic (non weather proof) enclosures - Absolutely shoddy workmanshop.

Stick to a standard

Those units are are Motorola's PTP range of wireless equipment.
They use Dual polarized antennas and OFDM modulation to reach speeds up to 300Mb/s.
Didn't check how many the were going to put up, but i think you can charge them R1500 per antenna and will still do it.

Renting a 155Mb/s Line from Telkom will set you back 1000's a Month with a minimum 1 year contract.

BTW: Is Comsol building their own networks now? That would seem to be a conflict of interest as they are distributors selling this to other installers, Telecoms operators. I wonder if Comsol is actually licenced to this?

My understanding is that the installation is being done for a single user. There was mention made that this individual would be using Dimension Data.

Packetloss when you say per antenna I assume you are meaning for each pair, as my understanding is that we will literally just provide a point to receive data and then transmit it on to the next high point, so there will be one "receiver" and one "transmitter"?

If you are situated well there is no reason why you cannot charge them 1.5k per antenna. Didata / IS think its the same bunch putting up links by your place.
Hope you negotiated a nice and long contract period for your roof rental:D
