In my experience, it goes two ways, bigger screen and built in numeric keypads, easier when working on big spreadsheets.

Smaller screen, smaller keyboard, more portable and lighter. This seems to be the current trend in most companies, with the end user having little input into the machine they will be using.

Having said that, most people only carry the laptop from parking lot to office etc, so the weight become less of an issue.

Therefore I was luckily been able to request from IT that they buy my team laptops with builtin numeric keypads/bigger screens. Rest of specs as per IT/Company policy.

Depends on usage.. Devs will have a higher spec than consulting , and management smaller in size

I've got a Dell i7 with 16gb of ram and 500gb ssd.

I think my next one will be a MacBook pro. Just for a change of scenery.

If I did have input:

SSD, no need for big HDD, all work needs to be the on server. In my opinion, really good boost to productivity.

Large battery capacity. With load shedding and working from home, this is becoming more important, luckily work laptop seems to last a minimum of 4 hours currently.

Dell Latitude 5400: I5-8365U / 16GB, DDR4 / M.2 512GB SATA / 14" FHD WVA (1920 x 1080)

It's a lovely laptop. However, it cannot compete with my desktop PC, which is not particularly powerful, but still a solid mid-range gaming PC.

The kicker though is the monitor situation - I've got a dual monitor setup at home: a 32 inch 2K @ 144Hz, with a secondary 27 inch HD monitor @ 75Hz. This is, for work-related purposes, glorious in terms of buttery smoothness and a sea of pixels to work with.

At the office I've got a 25UM58-P, which is not bad by any means, but in comparison to what I am currently using at home, there's a big difference in usability. I actually have two of these, and when back in the office, I need to figure out how (if possible), I can hook up the other one to the Thunderbolt port. When the power went off the other day I was trying to work on the laptop screen and it was like this:

We had a bunch or HP Folio's that have all died due to over heating.

Have replaced and standardized on Lenovo T4x0 series. The analysts love them.
(i7 / 16GB / SSD)

The new USB-C docks are nice and small but have had several replaced under warranty.

Most companies go with Dell for the support.
I chose a MBP mainly due to the Linux work I do and the ease of setting up SSH tunnels.
The company I work for uses Dell for 99% of their equipment and the base spec is an i5 with 16GB ram and 256GB+ SSD.

The company doesn't supply laptops, only desktops.
