Hi man.. From experience it doesn't make a MASSIVE difference.
It also depends on how high your sensitivity is (measured in cm/360)
If your sensitivity is low you don't need a high dpi mouse.
I use 25 to 33 cm per 360 so for me 800dpi is solid.
A few tips:
Make sure mouse doesn't skip.
Some laser sensors have some sort of acceleration, negative and positive so watch out for that.
Rather have higher polling rate than DPI.
If you use low sensitivity then optical sensors are better than laser.
Most importantly make sure your hands fit the mouse properly.
