you know i was thinking.. Telkom give us free local access with ADSL rental, ie you buy the the line and you hooked onto teh network, to break out you need an isp kinda deal. right now the adsl rental is a rip off cause it does nothing by itself except call centre help which we don't need more than once if ever again if their network worked properly.

lower prices
get rid of adsl rental
kill the cap
install within a month (preferably faster)
fix their call centers (personnel and infrastructure - it's like they're all reading off different systems at times!)

with that said though, they could do all this and I'd still switch. they've stolen enough of my money.

How about offering different rates durring different times of the day. I hear in Botswana they have no cap after hours so why can't Telkom do the same.

Sigh.. Scratch all that. The only way Telkom will ever improve is if ICASA makes them.

One of two things needs to happen:
ICASA need to allow some competition in the market
ICASA need to make Telkom stop behaving anti-competitively wrt other ISPs

I think I agree with Antowan. TelkomInternet (and possibly SAIX) should be split from Telkom.

Stop training their customer-facing employees to lie to consumers.

Stop with the sneakiness.

Respect our institutions of democracy, including govt.

Stop the real decision-makers from hiding behind an endless mass of powerless employees.

Be honest.

Comply with the law.

Realise that they too are subject to the Constitution and the laws of SA, as well as JSE and SEC regulations.

Provide services to those who request and can pay for such services.

Stop throwing tantrums.

1. A reasonable cap's: at least 30GB (and higher) @ todays 1GB price
2. Stop the stupid daily resets
3. Stop the Shaped vs. Unshaped saga and provide ALL Unshaped
4. Participate in public forum such as MyADSL openly and be prepared to face the wrath of the public - only then will it settle down. Be constructive and take comments and get to know your real customer.
5. Don't treat your customer as stupid - treat them with respect - listen to them
6. Don't undercut your resellers - the ISP's that buy bandwidth from you - by competing against them
7. Stop the stupid daily resets (oops, said that already)

1. Train staff better so they can actually help clients (also make them waffle on less). will halve hold times.
2. Offer online signups and order status checking
3. Have someone on this forum (and others) 24x7 that can cut thru red tape and get anything done in any dept. (may need more than one person and they need some clout)
4. Reduce prices further and increase caps
5. Offer fixed IPs and stop the daily resets
6. install any service within 30 days (this means bigger and better rollouts of fiber and dslams)
7. Promote and VOIP services more
8. Offer a countrywide Wifi Network (wifi masts at every exchange) as an alternative to ADSL. (ie: same ADSL logins work on wifi and bandwidth and caps the same as ADSL)
9. Offer more services to ISPs and resellers at a discount thats enough for them to make a decent profit.
10. Allow anyone to co-locate at Telkom exchanges (for a fee)
11. Every exchange should be like a peering point/data center. (Charging the same as someone like Hetzner)
12. Introduce better redundancy and provide a 99.99% SLA on ADSL
13. Allow people to purchase higher ADSL uplink speeds
14. allow folks to login their fixed line number on voip (which then diverts the landline to the voip)
15. Have a central customer console web page where folks can login and setup anything from their call diverts
to their adsl line speeds and phone book entries
16. when holding, fix the automated system to not thank you for holding every 20 seconds. every 3 mins would be better.

Ok guys ... what do you want to see Telkom do apart from the usual, "decrease cost", "increase speed" when it somes to broadband?... if it is something technical, be technical if u must ....

1. Hire people with some level of intellect for the callcenter (my apologies to the exception, Lynn, who's very bright and always helpful).
2. Train call center agents properly. Make sure they know what's cooking. There is nothing more enraging than asking a question and getting two completely differend answers.
3. Fire call center agents who provide poor service.
4. Pitch up on the scheduled install date.
5. Return calls. When queries are escalated, I'm always told the relevant department will phone me back in the next two days. NOT ONCE have they EVER phoned back.
6. Don't lay off thousands of people when you can't cope with the load

I understand that they have huge backlog of installations and their business is growing at ten times the speed they deserve, but I will happily deal with the wait if dealing with them is at least professional, efficient and quick.

Good point, though i think they waiting for WiMax rather, hopefully it will be on the same system.. they did hint that the payment structure will be the same so mebbe it will have a compatible system that works with the adsl one.

Basically a list of what you guys want ... well the common points (and some my own :))

1. I like the idea of the first 10Gig being Free, anything more you have to pay pro-rata…
2. Line rental must fall away
3. Train people esp customer facing people
4. Demand is outpacing the current build … so Telkom needs to accelerate the backbone for the DSLAMS (that is why there are no ports)
5. Continually improve install times (for a start within 30days)
6. Continually reduce prices (they doing this, but slowly)
7. Increase speed with simultaneous decrease in cost … like your top of the line ADSL will always cost say for eg. R300 (this year it might be 4meg adsl for R300 and next year it will be 8meg ADSL for R300) …
8. static IPs
9. Don’t have daily resets …
10. An online system where users can in real-time order services and configure current ones. Like bringing the Telkom backend systems to the consumer … so in fact the consumer actually does his/her own configuring of the service they want

Hmmm, well to be #1 Telkom does not need to do anything. We have a monopoly. They will always be #1.

PS: And please, don't hold your breath for the sno, who will have to hire infrastructure from Telkom.

  1. I would like to see TelkodemonopoliesHindernet sold off to an independent ISP, or closed down entirely and prevented from operating in the retail broadband space as an ISP.
  2. Fire everyone with any combination of the word Steve* in their name.
  3. Stop advertising altogether.
