South Africa is getting new driver's licence cards — What needs to change

South Africa is set to get new and improved driver's licence cards before the end of 2023, but industry stakeholders have pointed out that the main improvements in the licencing system don't need to wait until then.

Transport minister Fikile Mbalula has been vocal about a revamped driver's licence card that will feature advances to align it with international standards.

Hopefully we will have a new non ANC minister in 2024 that can sort this **** out before I have to renew mine.

Its almost like we are coming around full circle to how things used to be:

Your drivers license used to be pasted in your ID book. Only needed one document.

No space for your address?

Why on earth would one need to renew a drivers license other than to fund the anc.

Every year of driving one should in actual fact get better and better at it and hence this is just a pyramid scheme for funding the oinkers.

If memory serves me correctly it was the other Shaik brother that got the tender.

Addresses change frequently, so you can't put them on a card...
It's not unheard of to change the address on a driving licence if you move.

Makes no sense having your address on the new driving card.
Being able to provide proof of address makes a lot of sense.

Oddly enough my Traffic Register Number certificate does have my residential and postal addresses on it.

I suppose there is some reason but why cant we have some kind of 'chipped' card, that would be your ID, your drivers, your gun licence, your SASSA....You could then update it or change details on it without having to repirint?

(Traffic pigs etc would need a scanner and the brain power to use it so I suppose thats why....! )

What happens if I move?
Do I then need a new Drivers License?
Obviously. You go online, change your address, and they issue you a new card. That's what I do for my UK licence and it's already what you have to do for your vehicles.

“There needs to be an improvement at the Driver’s Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) in terms of how you apply for a new or replacement driving card.”
Here's one simple improvement:
Allow of online payments when making a booking.
Capture all information online instead of using paper forms

If you do a drivers test you:
1) Book online
2) Go to DLTC a few days before test to:
2a) fill in a form and pay
2b) pay
3) Do Test
4) Collect card

(1) and (2) should be combined
2a) fill in form online - so it does not need to be captured
2b) pay online

(3) and (4) should be combined - collect card immediately after passing - i.e. have a printer at the DLTC.

You do know you are dreaming?

There is no opposition in numbers and worse is going to be collisions which are not going to get anything done effectively.

Let's hope it is not this DA Shadow guy in this new cabinet, technical parts are beyond him

good luck to these scammers. won't be applying for any new cards or government money making schemes

UK a 1st world country with no service delivery issues.

If they make it as simple & quick as UK, then good.
