∙On New Year’s Day, a 26-year-old woman was found dead on a public road near Mqanduli.

∙On the same day, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 46-year-old father in a village near Butterworth.

∙A day later, a woman, 36, was stabbed to death with a bush knife by an unknown man, who crawled into her hut while she was sleeping at Lugwijini, near the KwaZulu-Natal border.

∙On January 3, again in Mqanduli, a 66-year-old pensioner was raped by a man who forcibly entered her home.

∙On the same day, a 17-year-old teenager disappeared from her home in Tshontini, also near Mqanduli. She was found raped and strangled in a field where cattle grazed two days later.

∙The next day, a girl aged 10 was raped at Mthokwana near Ngqeleni by an unknown suspect.

∙Also on January 4, when most of the rapes happened, an 18-year-old girl was violated at Ntlekiseni near Mthatha.

∙In Waterfall, a 15-year-old girl was raped while walking in a field. She was grabbed by an unknown man who raped her and then ran away.

∙At Bityi near Mthatha, a 17-year-old was raped while walking to the shops.

∙A 29-year-old woman was raped, also in Mqanduli.

∙On January 5, a 52-year-old woman was killed by her partner after a row.

∙A woman, 28, was killed in Elliotdale after she was accused by a man of cheating on him.

∙A 17-year-old girl was raped in a field by an unknown man near Bityi.

∙A woman, 20, was raped at Ngqeleni, apparently by a “well-known man”. Police did not give the name.

∙On January 7, a 12-year-old girl was raped at her home in Maqebevu when a man broke into her house.

∙At Ngqeleni, a 22-year-old woman was raped.

No actually (and without a lot of research) the original quote is from the American Declaration of Independence.
