So I've been out of the latest tech phone craze for a while. I bought a Nexus 5 couple of years back & it was the best decision ever. Only reason I'm looking to change is because my power button gets stuck at random moments, resetting my phone. The discontinuation of the Nexus 5 is something else added on now.

My first thought was to get the Nexus 5X. Very reasonably priced. The downside of the Nexus 5X or even 6P is that end of life is being advertised as next year.

What other good & well priced Android stock phones should I look at?

What is your budget? What do you want in a phone? Spec power house or something for Instagram? Size? Do you want a good camera or meh? How about software updates.
It is difficult to make any recommendation without an answer to these questions.

He has an unlimited budget and is a technogeek. SuperPower User. Highest spec possible.

Easy them, Note 7. Since has unlimited budget, he should get a good fire suppressant system as well

Just get the next Nexus.

Nothing beats Vanilla Android and the prompt software updates.

Paper specs are all very well, but people with the money who want to buy top class don't buy cheap lower quality budget Chinese manufacturer handsets.

They look pretty in pictures and remarkable by specs, but never quite live up to those expectations in long term use...

No one begrudges the poor person who can't afford better, those phones do the job quite well for what they are, but the person who can afford better will always choose the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy over the budget Chinese maker's handsets 100 times out of 100.

He has a LG Nexus 5 so don't think he care/is a brand whore.... the only problem is with him wanting stock android but with even Oneplus abandoning it in favor of their Hydrogen OS it's getting harder to find a stock android like experience without going to Nexus/Pixel devices. With Miui even pushing security updates to 2012 devices it's the best alternative and imo the best Android experience.

Xiaomi will once again claim the number 3 spot when they move into US next year and they're number 2 in wearables. Don't see them being a poor choice in anything.

And just as you say that, Samsung have to recall their super duper world beating, battery exploding - flagship Galaxy Note 7 phone ;-)
