I am quite an IT pro but can't find a solution:

I want to start using 3G with a Router (have Huaweis E372 and an older model) am using 8ta dedicated.
- Later I want to use ADLS/VDSL in SA. heard router must run with Annex A. What about VDSL? Annex A or J? Is a splitter used to split telephone and A/VDSL signal?
- Dual Band Simultaneously (for guests with older devices). Large house and 1000sqm plot so I hope 5Ghz is better but maybe 2,4 is enough.
- USB to share drives in Network

I can't find a router do it all. My idea of a solution:
Mobile Router and adding later an ADSL/VDSL-Modem (small box) and connect to router like I have done in ancient DSL times.

Any ideas?

Hi There,
The number of VDSL routers in RSA is still pretty limited.
I would go for now with the work around.

Asus DSL-N66U

Very expensive but the Asus router/modems are very good (I have the previous generation DSL-N55U and it's awesome :D though the N55U isn't VDSL sadly)

I am using an Asus RT-N66U with a Pace 921 as the modem (not good for anything else).

The Asus RT-N66U does have 3G (and E372 works well) and failover support.

I haven't seen small VDSL modems around as yet.

5GHz works well, but the range seems to be quite restricted. I have to connect further devices with 2.4GHz.

Note : The Pace does support 3G and failover, so is an option on its own - the wifi is just not great. Telkom supplies this device.

Note : The NetGear DGND3800B N600 Gigabit Modem Router would also be a good choice (available on eBay), but I am not sure whether it supports 3G.

Thanks for the Input:

I want great Wifi since it is a fairly large house.
The ASUS DSL-N66U sounds excellent but only has internal antennas, no socket for external ones.
If RT-N66U is bad with 3 external antennas how bad must the DSL one be?

But I guess it's better to get with a N66U unit (newer) than with a N55U and either add a VDSL modem if needed or a repeater.
DSL-N66U would cost me R2000 and RT-N66U about R1350

It just seems it has internal antennas and no possiblity to add external ones, does it?

The RT-N66U wifi is not exactly bad, it is the best router that I have used, it is just that the 5N band does not reach to the extremes of my house.

My house does cover a wide area.

Up the output of the RT-N66U from 80mW to the max of 200mW and see the difference.

I have a double storey house, 2 home offices outside, and a bar/entertainment area. The wifi covers my entire property (placed it upstairs).

I used to have 4 access points dotted around to provide full coverage. Now I just have the Asus.

I can go about 2 houses up the road and still remain connected - although weak.

Have decided on an AVM Fritz.Box 3390. I own an AVM model already. They have very good software and all included what I need:
2x USB
450Mbit, dual-band simultaneously
Support for 3G modems
ADSL2+/VDSL modems
Annex A

Just no external Antannaplugs.
AVM is very popular abroad but sells in SA too.
