What sank the Titanic?

San Antonio - A century after the Titanic disaster, scientists have found an unexpected culprit for the sinking: the moon.

Anyone who knows history or has seen the blockbuster movies knows that the cause of the transatlantic liner's accident 100 years ago next month was that it hit an iceberg.

“But the lunar connection may explain how an unusually large number of icebergs got into the path of the Titanic,” said Donald Olson, a Texas State University physicist whose team of forensic astronomers examined the moon's role.

Ever since the Titanic sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912, killing 1,517 people, researchers have puzzled over Captain Edward Smith's seeming disregard of warnings that icebergs were in the area where the ship was sailing.

Smith was the most experienced captain in the White Star Line and had sailed the North Atlantic sea lanes on numerous occasions. He had been assigned to the maiden voyage of the Titanic because he was a knowledgeable and careful seaman.

Greenland icebergs of the type that the Titanic struck generally become stuck in the shallow waters off Labrador and Newfoundland, and cannot resume moving southward until they have melted enough to re-float or a high tide frees them, Olson said.

So how was it that such a large number of icebergs had floated so far south that they were in the shipping lanes well south of Newfoundland that night?

The team investigated speculation by the late oceanographer Fergus Wood that an unusually close approach by the moon in January 1912 may have produced such high tides that far more icebergs than usual managed to separate from Greenland, and floated, still fully grown, into shipping lanes that had been moved south that spring because of reports of icebergs.

Olson said a “once-in-many-lifetimes” event occurred on Jan. 4, 1912, when the moon and sun lined up in such a way that their gravitational pulls enhanced each other. At the same time, the moon's closest approach to earth that January was the closest in 1,400 years, and the point of closest approach occurred within six minutes of the full moon. On top of that, the Earth's closest approach to the sun in a year had happened just the previous day.

“This configuration maximized the moon's tide-raising forces on the Earth's oceans,” Olson said. “That's remarkable.”

His research determined that to reach the shipping lanes by mid-April, the iceberg that the Titanic struck must have broken off from Greenland in January 1912. The high tide caused by the bizarre combination of astronomical events would have been enough to dislodge icebergs and give them enough buoyancy to reach the shipping lanes by April, he said.

Olson's team has sought to use tide patterns to determine exactly when Julius Caesar invaded Britain and prove the legend that Mary Shelley was inspired by a bright full moon shining through her window to write the gothic classic “Frankenstein.”

The team's Titanic research may have vindicated Captain Smith - albeit a century too late - by showing that he had a good excuse to react so casually to a report of ice in the ship's path. He had no reason at the time to believe that the bergs he was facing were as numerous or as large as they turned out to be, Olson said.

“In astronomical terms, the odds of all these variables lining up in just the way they did was, well, astronomical,” he said.

The research will appear in the April issue of “Sky & Telescope” magazine. - Reuters

So it was still an iceberg that sunk it, just the reason that the iceberg was there has now been theorised.

An Ice berg? This postulation of why there was such an abundance of ice bergs so far down is interesting. Then again as to why it struck the ice berg in the first place........?

the sinking of Titanic. The Sons of Belial had deliberately sunk Titanic in 1912 to prevent the Law of One from creating world peace. Members of the Sons of Belial who had access to media outlets had deliberately pushed an agenda in the media to give "Titanic" the aura of unsinkability so they could proceed with their plans of taking over the world.

Before the voyage had begun, a Son of Belial member had met with and ordered Captain Smith to ignore any kind of warnings or advisories he might receive during the journey and go "full steam ahead" at all costs. The name of the member was J.P. Morgan.

In the "official" history books, J.P. Morgan had backed out of his decision to sail on Titanic at the last minute because of his wife's "alleged" premonition of the sinking of the ship. This was an alibi for Morgan because he had taken out the world's most expensive insurance policy on Titanic through Lloyd's of London and his company White Star Lines. In order make sure the luxury liner's maiden voyage would be a disaster, J. Bruce Ismay was sent by Morgan to remind Captian Smith of his "orders".

Lets look at this in perspective. Why would such a tragic event be planned? You have to understand who was on the ship. Several influential persons on the ship who were from the Law of One faction of Freemasonry were in the process of creating the foundations of what would eventually become a "League of Nations" or Pax Humana. After the ship struck the iceberg died in the cold North Atlantic sea, the creation of the "League of Nations" was carried on by Law of One members who survived. It's now a fact that those who died on the ship were homicide victims at the hands of the Sons of Belial. Titanic was doomed from the beginning.

The very next year in 1913, the Sons of Belial faction of Freemasonry had created their own influential organization with the help of J.P. Morgan and his billionaire friend and Standard Oil Company owner John D. Rockefeller. The both of them would use the money from Titanic's insurance policy to create the foundations for the bureaucracy of the "New World Order" in 1913. That year the "Council on Foreign Relations" , an organization which would eventually have offshoots like the United Nations in 1948 and the "Trilateral Commission" in the 1970's, was unofficialy established. The CFR would be "officially established" by 1921.

Conspiracies a plenty.

Yep so science just confirmed something Astrology has known for years. :)

If you're familiar with the SuperMoon concept (introduced to the astrological community with my 1979 article for Dell Publishing Company's HOROSCOPE magazine), you already know that I have described a new or full moon which coincides with lunar perigee as an important indicator of extreme tides on Earth. (See Century 21 (CE) SuperMoons for more.) But what of perigee as a thing in itself, regardless of any association with a new or full moon? The table above lists time and zodiacal position data for all of them for 2011, along with the opposite point in the lunar orbit (apogee, maximum distance from Earth). In addition, the actual distance in kilometers from Earth to Moon is shown for each apogee and perigee of the year. The closest perigee of 2011 (March 19, at 356,577 kilometers), is marked with an asterisk; as is the farthest apogee (April 2, at 406,655 kilometers). To put these figures into perspective, the farthest apogee in the period 1750-2125 is 406,720 km. (on February 3, 2125), and the closest possible perigee during this same period is 356,375 km. (on January 4, 1912): see John Walker's excellent article Inconstant Moon: The Moon at Perigee and Apogee for more on this.

Still doesn't explain this part ..

Maiden voyage - plenty publicity - would have trying to make best crossing time/speed

Still when you know there are massive iceburgs in the area you should chill and ensure you make your journey. It's like people who jump red robots to get somewhere 2 minutes faster, many times they don't even get there.

So in short everyone can blame the moon for Celine Dion's My heart will go on.
