What second hand car must I buy?

Im in exactly the same position, 23 looking for a 2nd hand car. Was thinking of getting a sentra 140i. Either that of a golf Or a 98 astra.

The thing with me is that I don't know a lot about cars. Let's say I drive on the highway or where ever and the car stops and breaks down, I wouldn't know what to do, I wouldn't. So I don't really want an OLD car but at the same time I can't afford new car so I have to settle with a second hand car, but the car must be reliable so as not to give me problems or breaks down or something.

For me a Toyota Yaris would be my ideal first car, I read from a website that it's fuel consumption on average is about 5.5 litres/100 kms for a T1 model, and fuel consuption for most cars are about 8 litres/100 kms. But I can't afford a Yaris so for now a Tazz will do.

Try to get your hands on a Test or Demo model they are ussaly well kept and sometimes have a little of the warrenty attached to them.

Even though i love everything VW, i would have to say that toyota stands out in the reliability and fuel economy departments...
So a toyota tazz gets my vote

There are only so many things that you can do at the side of the road. Check that you are getting fuel, that your air intake isnt blocked. Cars tend to break down, even new ones. So expect it to happen on the odd occasion. As long as you service it properly and dont wind the tits off the poor thing you should be alright.

I am also looking now to get a 2nd car cheap for running around.
Looked at the yaris, but even 2nd hand, they sell above retail (which is good when u want to trade in) - cheapest was like 70k.
Was also looking at tazz, my only problem with the tazz is that the only good thing about it is the bulletproof engine (for e.g. last time i rode in a Tazz my back killed me).
The corsa lite was another option, atleast 20k cheaper than Yaris but i heard stores about maintenance.

wow...im also 23 but im stuck with my golf 194 000 kms on the clock and has been going like a beaut since i got him in 2007.only had one major service and replaced alternator but other than that its a perfect A-B citi car. But seriously stay away from them because they are on the hijack shopping lists. The Tazz sounds good but man the Tazz is just not an attractive looking car at all.... at least they tried to make '*****ty golf' look a little slick. i plan to get a new car in 2011 but for now im big city life

Toyota stopped Tazz production 2 or 3 years ago. Inability to conform with stricter safety rules was given as a reason.
I would think twice before buying one.
