What Smartphone to get now?

To me, none of this makes sense.
I'm holding my phone right now and all I feel in my hands is the cover. Whether you get the HTC One, s4, or even an iPhone, you need to put it in a case with a screen protector. This is the ONLY way to properly protect it from scratches and bumps. Therefore, it makes absolutely no difference how the phone is built, because it will be covered in any case.
So between the s4 and HTC one, the s4 is smaller, lighter bigger screen, better battery and better warranty. That makes it a winner in my book.

Additionally, if you hate touchwiz that much, just root and flash a custom rom. There are already a few AOSP style roms for the i9500

Please post a link to a stable one! As far as I know, it's a real challenge developing a custom rom for the Exynos i9500. When I last checked I could not find a rom without major issues.

I would go for either
HTC One
S4
Xperia Z Ultra or the smaller one
LG G2
Moto X probably might never come here :(
A guy from Vodacom said they might be offering Nexus devices soon but I have my salt ready for that one.
I'm still using my Note 2,very happy

Edit: was reading a few pages back, a Vodacom guy told me the 2 free Samsung screen and water repairs deal is only for the S4

When you're buying a high-end smartphone these days, comparing specs/hardware is pointless. They ALL have processors in the top 1% of any mobile processor ever made on this planet. They ALL have batteries that will probably last until the next time you're near a plug point. They ALL take better photos than the best compact digital camera of 5 years ago. And they'll ALL break, get scratched, crack, and probably need to be kept in a cover anyway (Xperia Z might be a little bit ahead in this regard).

In terms of software, HTC Sense 5 is the one that feels like it's had the most effort put into it to add to the experience of Android. But even if you don't like it, it's not a dealbreaker because you can just install your own launcher (there are thousands on Play Store and installing one takes seconds) or go the whole hog and root your phone, obviating any advantage a manufacturer's software has over another's. Of course, this is more limited with iOs/BB/Windows.

In the end the device itself has little to do with its own success. Samsung will continue to sell well because it's the manufacturer that has been most successful at carrying brand loyalty from the pre-smartphone era (remember when everybody had an E250?). Apple will continue to sell well because of the "status" associated with owning an iDevice. Sony, HTC, Nokia etc. will keep building damn good devices that 80% of the smartphone-buying masses will never even consider.

Be aware of all these things when picking one. There is no objective standard of what is the best phone. Ignore what people say and just buy the one you like the most.

(Unless the one you like the most is a BlackBerry, that is :whistling::D)

I've never used a cover for a mobile phone, nor a screen protector.. it's perfectly safe in my pocket.

Why would I want something to be in the way of me and the device?

Why buy a R8000 phone, then put a R10 screen protector on the gorgeous display?

Mind you, the person who buys it second hand from you, gets to experience the phone like you should have.

That's all nice and well in theory. However, forget keys in your pocket with your phone, put it in your top pocket and lean over, place it on the table n drop it by mistake, or even give it to a friend/kid to hold and ull WISH you had just paid R10 to protect your R8000 phone...

I have had a lot of phones, but have never managed to crack a screen.

If you are very clumsy or lazy, or get drunk often, get insurance.

When u mention cases and screen protectors, it is not for the sake of saving the screen (I myself also haven't managed to crack a screen). But scratches and marks and even humps will show very quickly without any protection, and no insurance will help with those...

Recently I've had dealings with builders and plumbers and, fair enough, they needed their phones with them as they took a lot of photos and needed covers because of their work,

But for the vast majority covers and screen protectors are just a waste of time and money. I've had many phones and iPods but have yet to have an accident.

Screens are scratch-proof on most phones now, anyway.

I got my S3 the month it released in SA and haven't used any cases, pouches or protectors of any kind, and it looks as it did the day I got it. The screen is still flawless. Just look after your stuff and it'll be fine.

That's is pretty impressive. Do you ever put other things in your pocket (eg keys) with your phone?

Lol no way. That would just be looking for s**t. I'm very careful and protective of my phone. I do own the official Samsung cover for it, but I took it off when I saw how ugly the phone is with it on. I've seen some decent cases for the S3, but I'm not prepared to make my phone so thick.

I'm pretty torn between the protection of a cover and that naked feel of the device. Screen protectors however are a no brainer - there's no real disadvantage.

At the moment I don't have my rubber case on my phone, only the screen protector.

I find it funny, my 'naked' and unprotected phones usually looks way better that my friends' who use covers and whatnot. Dont know why that is?? Guess some people tend to get careless when their phone has a cover on.

My phones go in my right pocket and my wallet and keys go in my left pocket. I have a cover around the sides of my phone that sticks out at the front a bit so the edge is protected. Gorilla glass is strong from the front but week from the side.

I don't like screen protectors. I can instantly tell if someone else's phone has one on. The latest screens are so scratch resistant, what's the point of a screen protector?
