Hi there.

Win 7 x64 Home Premium

I bought a new PC and decided to go with Home Premium without knowing that this version of Win 7 does not support remote desktop. What software can you recommend for me to access my PC at home from my XP Prof Desktop @ work?

I have used ultraVNC previously but have read that security is not OK and Symantec pcAnywhere was recommended. But it costs way to much for what I need it for.

Regards,
Deon

So you can't connect to a Win 7 Home Premium machine with remote desktop?

If so, thanks for the headsup. I'll be looking at Pro then.

.

Unfortunately not. I have only discovered this after buying Home Premium, battled for a day changing firewall settings and so on, googling a lot and discovered that Win 7 Home Premium can be a client but not server.

Use Teamviewer. I have it on my home machine (vista home premium x64), and connect quite successfully from my XP work machine.

That.

Works brilliantly through any kind of weird proxy or dynamic ip whatnot, and you can even remote desktop inside the browser if need be .

Teamviewer is also decent, but LogMeIn has a few extra non-remote desktop related applications that goes well with the setup, like the whole "virtual lan" thing so you can do the filesharing type of stuff.

I'm an currently logged into my home pc using LogMeIn's Hamachi. Works pretty great! Can't complain!

Yea some more info for the others, on the LogmeIn site there's 2 products of note:

https://secure.logmein.com/welcome/g...ree/signup.asp
LogMeIn Free ,which basically gives you the whole remote desktop/management functionality between PCs that all have this particular software installed (as mentioned earlier).

https://secure.logmein.com/US/products/hamachi2/
LogMeIn Hamachi, which creates a VPN between PCs (your own little private network) without requiring any fancy setups or anything. This is particularly useful if your work and/or home is behind some proxy or NATted-IP and you want to connect to the PC directly with something specific that needs a direct IP (like MS Remote Desktop/FTP etc etc)

Both are of course Free for Non-Commercial use, without any limits or restrictions.
