I am sure other companies pay some kind of taxes. If they also do that I am happy.

But are we the only country in the world with this, I am sure there are other's.

I think ISPA are commentating on how poor journalism says it has to give up 30%of its global business to launch in SA….

It has to startup a local business with a local partner with 30% equity from a compliant partner or firm. It can then apply for a license. There are other costs though not mentioned which I think are ridiculous. ICASA DEMANDS a percentage of your revenue which is of higher concern to me which would cause disinvestment.

Nobody thought they have to give up 30% of their global business...

But why should they give up 30% of a local subsidiary when the bee partner brings sweet fek all to the table.

Of course that's what everyone's been saying and there's no rule the local entity has to make any profit and pay anybody, but why would a global entity care about a country with onerous licensing requirements by a corrupt government? We were a joke when we were one of the few countries not supported by Paypal despite one of its founders being from here and history is repeating itself.

I have heard Qatar insists on 51% Qatari ownership. Not exactly the same though since it's by citizenship and not by race

Most countries request local ownership or subsidiaries, SA just requests a black owned partnership
Its not mandatory, even with Starlink it wont be necessary unless they start making billions in profit then government will step in
Its also not a large black owned percentage, if franchised for example, 30 out of 100 stores will need to be black owned

I don't think that Elon Musk is that desperate to launch StarLink in the country though. He has said pretty nothing about it on X.

Its a needs based service and most of its income is through government initiatives, disaster management and emergencies
If it was capitalistic in nature, it will be in every country around the world and he will be pushing it through his media companies and bundling it in with his cars

Most countries don't demand that it be made up of a majority population group which ends up being party cadres. It's also a percentage of the business rather and it's mandatory if you want the needed license whether local or foreign. Who would have ever thought that SA would again have racist quotas while at the same time seeking to outlaw racism instead of legalising it like other constitutional democracies.
