Problem: MTN GPRS/DATA Problems all over South Africa!!

I am REALLY annoyed now!!!

I need to use messenger programs for work purposes... i'm spending a FORTUNE on mtn, yet i can't connect!!!!

It's not just Messenger programs tho

When i try to access International sites i get

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at mail.yahoo.com

* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

It's NOT just yahoo - it's MANY different international sites!!
I wish mtn would have some freaking message board to tell us what the hell is wrong or when they are having problems!!!

I've checked EVERYTHING, the modem, the computer, phoned them twice - and i'm on the phone holding now AGAIN for already 14mins 44 seconds!!!

Even my mail servers don't work!!!!

Just as i think everythign is fine again - then suddenly the whole thing starts again.

with MSN for eg, i would type something, and immediately it wouldn't go through - then i repeat it usually up to 7 or 8 times before it goes thru. Then once it's "Broken free" it seems to hold for a while... until i'm idle again for a bit - and then the whole damn process starts over again!!!!!

AT LEAST TELL US WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG!!!

well... right now i'm RIGHT next to the MTN headquarters in Sandton - like 40m away.... i think my signal is PRETTY good!!

I was here this morning at 4am at sandton city - and it worked perfectly.... until it started filling up with people - after 9am it REALLY started to suck!!

I think its their capacity or something....

YOU are obviously in an area where there are no living beings!! Do u live in Pofadder?

Honestly i'd have to say - MTNs performance over the last month or so has REALLY sucked!! Ever since that ruling came over them where they're not allowed to advertise that they're offering 1.8mbps speeds!!!

Makes u think!

I wish i rather signed a vodacom contract :(

I live in Durban about 13KM from the Absa Stadium, so yes there are "living beings" here

congestion must obviously play a part... and the fact that when you dial 1555 and get a message "We are aware of the problems with gprs, our technicians are working on it....", and then continue to hold on for someone to answer for no less than 45mins each time...

in MY book....somethings up! either they didn't pay their electrical bill.... and didn't even bother to tell their telephone agents about it. so the agents run like puppets through the motions of what it says step for step to do on their screens.... I mean seriously "take out the modem, then take out the simcard..." this is like grasping at straws imo

I have a feeling its more like they haven't paid their sewage license ... and now they're more than waist high in something!

I live in Simons Town and I have Edge here but sooo slow that even some pages on this site won't open. When I drive 5km to Fishoek where there is GPRS only, I get much better results (same laptop and modem) The 1'st week of every month I get NO signal for +- 4 days and this has been consistant for the past 5 months.
Download speed was about 20 kbps when we first got Edge, but is now between 0 and 9kbps. Very erratic. Netmeter looks like thin bargraphs instead of solid blocks as is used to.

I just phoned MTN and actually got thru on 1555

The dude told me that a "certain percentage" of people in the country have problems with their gprs. HSDPA/3G and EDGE are all running on GPRS technology and therefore all these are affected by this problem.

They don't know when it will be fixed

I know all about your frustration. Cancelled mine like a month ago and moved to VC. Speeds are great and price is reasonbly fair. Only get hiccups now and again but they are very small.

Also - the guy from 1555 told me that it only seems to affect a certain "TYPE" of user... i'm on the R479 monthly bundle - getting 2GB "Promotional bundle" crap.

Does this mean that MTN pushed the people who are on THAT bundle into a different bracket? Do we get a poorer service because we pay the least per mb??

I get lots of people asking me where to go in terms of broadband etc...
I am NOT recommending MTN.... cause i would look like an idiot to tell my friends that this is the best option.... MTN SUCKS!

I live in Bellville, Cape Town and I'm also having trouble with downloads today, it took forever to open this page. My top download speed was 155.6 kbps, with an average speed of around 4 kpbs - and this will a full HSDPA signal! Something is definitely up, I hope this post gets through. Guess I'll have to dust off my VC sim...

Same problem here in Brackenfell since Friday. I get terrible speeds and sometimes I can't even get connected.

It's very bad.

I'm in Pinelands ((about 100 meters from Howard Centre), both my MTN & Voda connection speed/signal is great!!! As I compose this, my Voda data card is on 3G and my TyTN is on HSDPA (they frequently alternate between 3G and HSDPA)!! Great!!! Oh, I never had any problems with signal streangth, connection speed on both networks for a very very long time.

I now used my old virgin PAYG simcard and popped it into my E220 modem...

It's slow.... but EVERYTHIGN works!!
The worst of it all ... is that when it all works again - then they will all probably just go on and not even apologize, explaining why they have EGG on their face!

Different connections I've tried:
- my Autopage 3G sim in my E220
- my Autopage 3G sim in my old Nokia 9500
- my Autopage Voice Sim in my E220
- my MTN-SP Data Sim in my E220
- My Autopage 3G sim in my TyTN
- my MTN-SP sim in my TyTN

ag i don't even remember all the different combinations i've tried.

Almost all tho... i have 3x different mtn simcards on 3 different contracts, and 3 different modems (E220, Nokia 9500, HTC TyTN), i tried it on 3 different computers (2x Windows XP Machines, and 1x Mac)

Still no luck!!

Now it works on my Virgin sim in my E220

What bugs me, is that none of the MTN reps have responded to this thread.

They've probably all been called in to head office to brain storm how to make more money out of their clients
