I am hoping somebody can answer some of the questions I have with regards to the slow unstable Cell C network.

Been a Cell C customer for just over a year and damn has it been a roller coaster ride of note.

I have access to an unrestricted APN on a black dongle and another on the normal APN, the difference between the 2 dongles are huge in terms of performance, I understand that the unrestricted APN is in Beta test phase.

However the million dollar question is when will Cell C actually get a bit of normality applied to there network, still after a year, unrestricted or not, there is no stability or constant service available.

A year has past, so if they cannot get there network sorted in a year what reason as a consumer do I have, to stay with cell C as a service provider. In today's economic climate a important part of a company doing business is to obtain repeatably business in this case they are not getting mine, once the bandwidth is completed I am defiantly going to repeat my business some where else.

So long CELL C, thanks for the CON

I am affraid I have to agree with this. My Cell C speeds have been crap two months after I got my speed stick last year. I get a burst now and again but that is pretty much it. The signal at my house have also now gone from great on my cellphone to crap. I used to have almost full bars...now I am lucky if my phone gets 3G at all...and when it does there is not through put. WhatsApp hangs and android market times out. I logged a call last night for this. The guy said it can take a very very long time to sort out. *sigh*

I've seen something similar, and it's not just with the 'unrestricted' APN, it depends on the luck of the draw whether you get a 197.x address or a 41.x address on the 'internet' APN as well:

On my modem I always get 197 IP range. Is that why the service is so shocking for me? It does not explain what happened to my signal at the house though. I think there is something wrong with the tower and told the guy from Cell C as much when I logged the fault last night. In Midrand at work I have full 3G and 2G signal.

It doesn't appear that the 197.x is always slower than the 41.x range, it is just that they can be vastly different even on the same base station.

IIRC, the Cell-C techs set you up so you always use the one "server" while troubleshooting the WhatsApps/Gtalk issue. That might be why you always get an IP address from the 197.x range.

No...they set my voice sim in my phone to always get a 147 or something IP...but that has since been reversed I think as I have seen my phone getting 197 IP here and there. On my modem they did not do anything and I always seem to get a 197 IP and my modem is always crap....even before I had the new signal problem that started about 2 weeks ago on my phone.

Well...I logged my call on the 9th...and have not even had a follow up call or SMS saying that the investigation is ongoing as to the fault on the BTS. Nice. This is exactly what I feared when I signed up with Cell C....and low and behold it is coming true!

Don't waste your time dude, finish the bandwidth that you have with Cell C and move on,what you have done above I've been doing for a year!

To date nothing, in actual fact it is getting worse.

Yeah not to stressed about my speedstick. Think it ends next month. I am worried about my phone. The main reason why I signed up with RBM was because I tested my signal first with a prepaid...had great 3G and 2G signal. Now it seems to be going down the toilet. When my phone does get a 3G signal there is no through put and so I force it onto 2G...but even then sometimes when I pick up my phone to do something it has no signal...just a big red cross where the signal bar is supposed to be.

Interestingly my house is not the only place this is happening. I was house sitting this weekend for a friend of mine that lives in Wendywood and I used to have great signal there also....full 3G everywhere. This weekend I had to leave my phone in her bedroom just to get 2G signal!!!!!

No data on my phone. WhatsApp message hanging. Tried switching to 3G and back to edge...tried going into airplane mode and back online...nada! URG!

Is there anyone else in the Cyrildene/Bruma area experiencing this?

EDIT: Just got 6 missed WhatsApps that came through now that was sent during the night.

OK...so something else that I have noticed....when I am at home....I need to make sure my phone is on EDGE and not 3G...else there is no throughput and I dont get messages on WhatsApp and email. When I get to work...there is no throughput on EDGE again and my email says "connection timeout" or something....so then I have to force it to 3G to get data to work.

I am sorry to be such a downer....but Cell C for me has become extremely unreliable. I dont want to have to worry about whether my phone can get its messages or not and if I should switch between 2G or 3G etc. It is really becoming a pain!

I'm also experiencing serious slow net speed and intermittent throughput! Just spent 17 minutes with cell c, who, after much gnashing of teeth, confirm there's an issue on their network. No turn around time is available. Damn frustrating!!!! Looks like I'll jump the fickle data-ship next month, where to? I don't know yet.
