So my question wll the new standard prevent rubbish being manufactured and sold to me-?
Just don't buy rubbish. Get SABS / SANS 164 approved plugs. It's worth the extra cost.

Few years back, not many, I replaced many wall sockets in my house and added a lot in a new garage, today many of them had failed, while the older ones lasted for many many years. The new ones failed either you plug a plug in and then cannot get it out(Have to force it out) if earth prong was plastic, or the on/off part just stay on or stop functioning. These are still sold full blast no problem.
So I was looking the new ones in town, and cannot find one single one wall socket or plug to buy, because in some places the connections stay the same and won't bother if its different.

This whole plug thing is just so much bs. What is wrong with European standard? Why must we have our own standard?
This and old article but I think still relevant given how many of my Ellies plugs have failed..Just don't buy rubbish. Get SABS / SANS 164 approved plugs. It's worth the extra cost.
SourceProducts purchased included those imported by Yodata Electronics, Ellies and SGA Trading and, although the manufacturer is not stated on the product or packaging, all of these are manufactured in China, and branded Yodata, Ellies and SGA sElectrix, respectively.
None of the above products displays the SABS mark, although on one of them, the Yodata SMP10WSW 10-way portable socket-outlet/multi-plug adapter, the wording “SABS approved” is printed on the packaging. (It has since been established that Yodata Electronics does not have an SABS Mark Scheme permit for its SMP10WSW product, and as such the display of the wording “SABS approved” on the product and/or its packaging is expressly forbidden and in breach of the SABS Mark Scheme.)
