"Earn" - that's an interesting choice of word.

To run a telecoms company in South Africa is not an easy task, but looking at the salary packages of local CEOs and executives the trouble is well worth it.
Give me half their salary and I'll prove that it is.

This is one thing i don't understand, how can a person earn say R5m and be an absolute poor performer (Papi comes to mind) How does the board agree to that?

Maybe that is why they fired him?

The question is - poor performer to who? Clients or shareholders? This is Telkom, they certainly wouldn't have fired him for raping clients.

I think they fired him for not ripping us off enough!:D

Otherwise he would still be there.

and remember this does not include stock options, which over time can be more than earnings, and are only taxed at 15% (capital gains)

There is nothing stopping anyone from achieving these super earnings. You just need a solid track record of managing people and capital and building companies.

If there were a glut of such qualified people ready to take on these roles, the salaries wouldn't be so high. But there is a distinct shortage. Shareholders demand the best, and are prepared to pay for it.

And when you take on a job like this, you are sacrificng your life. No such things as quiet evenings at home with the familiy. No such thing as weekend getaways. Your life is not your own. Every minute of your day is planned and optimized. You walk around in a glass bowl, your every move and comment assessed and judged.

Personally, I much prefer being a well paid specialist/operator than being in upper management of a large corporation.

Achieving the rewards without selling your soul. That is the challenge.

???

Local CEO are paid WAY below international standards.

Hedge fund managers in US: Edward S. Lampert was paid >$1 billion in 2005. Thats billion with a B and Dollars as in not rands/monopoly money. src

GoldmanS CEO received a $54 million BONUS last year.

Not that I wouldn't mind getting a few million rands...:D
