Major ride-hailing flaw in South Africa — Uber, Bolt have "zero-tolerance" for it

Ride-hailing apps Uber and Bolt have a zero-tolerance approach to their drivers sharing or renting their accounts, the companies have told MyBroadband.

This comes after a reader alerted us to a frightening experience they had while using a ride-hailing service, where they became convinced that the driver was not the same person as displayed on the app.

If uber paid any attention to their local business they would be giving security the most attention, considering the **** hole.
This is a great opportunity for them to strengthen their system. But they in the US counting their dollars and working to make chopper rides.
Their company is going to dissappear into irrelevance

I was on a Bolt cab yesterday, and the person driving the vehicle did not match the person on the profile. I didn't ask why this was the case.

I am convinced one needs to say a little prayer before hopping into a Bolt, hehehe. Also, the quality of the cars on Bolt are trash now. Cars with smashed windscreens, or door handles that dont work, etc. I have found Uber driver cars to be of better quality.

After lodging a complaint, Uber quickly refunded the rider and assured them it would never pair them with the driver again.

I wish Mr D would do that, not pair you again with the same useless delivery driver.

:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

Didn't get that memo up until now.

In East London, there is a Xhosa term used to describe those old raggedy sedans (old and busted Toyota Tazz's, Corolla's, etc.) which are used as taxi's - "amaphela" (direct translation means cockroaches). I feel a lot of the Bolt vehicles are 1 or 2 notches above this status, hehehe

Implement proper biometrics and sponsor/subsidise the driver's phones. Problem solved.

They think "we" can't tell them apart.

Reminds me of a funny story recently, I was at the aiport waiting at arrivals and a Black gentleman next to me was holding up a sign board with someone's name on it... Simon.. Whatever. So I struck up a conversation with him and asked if he knew the person, he said that he didn't and that he was worried because all white people look the same to him, and started laughing loudly. I found that so funny, how each race thinks that people of another, all look alike.

I've been in the industry for over six years uber is the leader in making sure that the driver that appears in the picture is the driver that arrives to pick you up.

There is a driver feature where the app will request for the driver to take a selfie to confirm their identity as they are working throughout the day this feature is there for the passenger safety and to prevent people renting out their uber slots.

My advice to all riders is to request uber black as you get what you paid for. On uber x it is a hit-and-miss experience as each of the drivers will behave in their own unique way whereas on the uber black platform all drivers conform to the strict protocols of uber.

Uba's biometrics are cutting Edge and globally used to prevent this issue that everyone is talking about the feature forces all drivers to take a selfie throughout the day as they are accepting trips to verify their identity.

Please do not mix up uber and bolt these are two different companies with two different levels of understanding in relation to safety. Uber always makes sure that the driver that appears on the profile if the driver that arrives to your pick up.

A photo isn't as good as proper biometrics and the existing photo check should be at the moment of pickup not randomly throughout the day.

It’s true though. I sometimes battle with characters in a movie

Some of the riders lie about drivers, I remember I got a trip sometime ago. Before I got there the lady ask why my face don't match with the one on the profile. I ask her why because I'm.not there yet, when I got there she was so.ashamed I canceled the trio worried what more can she say after the ride. You guys are worried about old cars whilst you are the one mistreating them. You are paying less now where do you expect people to get money to fix these cars with these low fares.

Most riders especially Bolt one are crooks, after the ride they complain and say they were not in the car, drivers lose money daily because of selfish riders. Imagine someone spending hrs on the road jus for someone to enjoy free ride by lying. These ehailing should make a conference call if a rider complaint not jus deduct the drivers money. They must hear all sides of the story.

Sorry to hear you had some unfaithful passengers. Guess you get bad actors on both sides. Bolt cars really have degraded over the years.

As for the cost of using e-Hailing platforms, I think it is a bit of a catch-22. If it is too pricey using one, a good number of people will limit their usage, or not use such platforms all-together. If it is too cheap, then the drivers suffer. I wonder whether life was better for the cab driver before eHailing became a thing, or with eHailing platforms.

From what I understand (and this was told to me by a Bolt/Uber driver), the Uber app forces the driver to take a selfie when accepting a trip. It's not just a photo, they ask the driver to move their head up and down, and stick their tongue out, and a few other things to confirm the drivers identity. Not sure if it's random or every trip. Bolt on the other hand doesn't give a damn (again, according to the Bolt/Uber driver I spoke with). Bolt has no such features.
