What will eventually happen if I don't pay my TV license?

Hello,

I haven't had DSTV or SABC since 2012 and didn't want to mutilate my TV by removing the tuner and didnt want to pay some dude R300 just to inspect it so that I can cancel my license. I don't have an aerial or a satellite dish at all.

I continued to pay the license until 2018 just for the hell of it to prevent any legal issue but I decided that this country is so up to SH#T that I refuse to pay it now.

They want R1000 plus from me now because I haven't paid and threatening me with debt collectors and the works.

So, what now?
- Do I pay?
- Do I mutilate my TV?
- Do I pay the R300 for some dude to inspect it?

What is everyone else doing now? I'm pretty sure most of us stream now instead of consuming the radio channels or NEWS channels over the broadcast etc.

Anyone?? Any ideas what you think I should do?

Eventually your wife and family will start getting 3am phone calls demanding payment... The collections lawyers for the SABC actually give bottom feeding sharks a bad name.

I got harassed by Anthony Richards & Associates after the SABC handed me over for R1000 in outstanding licence fees. I have to admit the repeated calls and messages threatening me with legal action eventually pushed me to settle the outstanding amount.

When my dad-in-law passed in May 2020, the first claim against his estate was from the same law firm who successfully collected the outstanding TV-Licence fees from his estate.

It's been a stark reminder of what it means when you're submitting your details in compliance with all the rules and regulations. Y'all need to think about this before you bandwagon with all these "tax revolt" activists; they're coming for you first.

most of us dont pay anyways
i think @The_Ogre owes the most

oh and that R300 a year for them to come look, it is for every year, so you end up paying more than what a licence costs annually
Actually it's not every year for the inspector to come take a look.

Nothing at all

Despite me paying my licence every year since 1976, the SABC 4 years ago decided I had not paid. They phone me at least 4 or 5 times a year. Reciting the current licence receipt does nothing. They are thick as 2 bricks and disorganised

I recognise the number now. I answer the phone and tell them I am the housekeeper, Mr XXX is away in France for 6 months. This works

I used the email address on the website and to my enormous surprise, it

a. worked
b. resulted in my issue being resolved (after 2 months of correspondence)

Edit: @Wolvyreen , it might make it difficult to buy a new TV - they check for a valid license

mmmm interesting, coz i did read that somewhere last year, thanx

Q: HOW IS A TV SET “DENATURED” SO THAT A TV LICENCE IS NOT REQUIRED?
A: Removal of a television set’s "tuner" renders it incapable of receiving any TV signal and, consequently, exempt from the need to be licensed. Written notice to the SABC of such denaturing must be supported by documentary proof in the form of a letter/invoice/receipt from a reputable TV repairer or installer. A R300.00 payment must accompany such application to the SABC, after which an authorised agent will be despatched to inspect the applicant’s TV equipment. On receipt of confirmation from the agent that the applicant has NO television receiving equipment [TV set(s), VCR(s) or PC(s) fitted with a tuner card] in his/her possession, he/she will be exempted from payment of licence fees for the rest of the current licensing period. Should a licence holder thereafter require such exemption to be extended, written application by way of an affidavit confirming that the applicant still has no TV receiving equipment must be made on an annual basis three months before the end of each licence year. Should an authorised inspector visit an exempted licence holder’s premises and find that the receiving capability of his/her TV equipment has been restored, he/she becomes liable for payment of all applicable licence fees and penalties, plus a R300.00 inspection fee.

No - it's a once off fee, unless they come and you have a device with a TV tuner. This has probably been pointed out hundreds of times here.

Been there, done that. The "collections" resumed after 6 or 7 months. I used to leave the phone on the table and walk away

So you reckon I should just ignore all these threats of attorneys etc?!?

I mean, I don't even have a dish or aerial and haven't had one for 8 years. Why the hell should I pay these idiots ANYTHING AT ALL when they can't even run Eskom, SAA, SABC, ANC, the Water Crisis, our police force, our military is useless and the list just goes on and on and on and on and on....

I am so gatvol paying them and paying them and yet you see all these squatters with dishes on their houses and they don't pay a cent for TV licenses!

It's ricidulous!
