I believe one should not touch the initial capital amount. Put it away across multiple investments (4+) and only use half of the returns. The other half of the returns you re-invest to cater for inflation. In this way you will always have income from a source that should never dry up.

As much as I used to love SA, I would sell up here in SA and move to Ireland.
I sent my two SA-born sons to Ireland after my wife died some years back ... they are both now very successful in their respective work environments in Dublin.
I have visited them in Ireland a couple of times over the years, and they are really happy there.

It would be an awesome gesture. Helping you're fellow man would really come back to you ten fold, however I would do it via a church or organisation already specialising in these type of social ills. I like the idea of helping. It's an idea that is a slowly fading from our humanity. We are selfish by nature, however it is a vice not a virtue. So by helping others one is actually helping ourselves, right?
