There seems to be a flaw in this. My ID adds up to 55. Further being an Indian i have 8 as the pre 80s race defining no.
Any thoughts?

8 is not in the pre-80s defining list. Mine is also 8 but I'm not Indian.

So 8 is for the natives? we were not accommodated by that Pre80's classifications. Damn, the old administration was something else hey

The writer didn't mention that digits 8-10 are the sequence number on the birth registry for that day.

If your ID number is 880808 5080 080, then the 5 indicates you are a male and the 080 denotes that you are the 80th male whose birth was registered as being on 8 August 1988.

The old race number should be converted to a version number. Change your ID number when the ID card gets stolen. There is no current way of changing your ID if your ID is stolen. Even adding a "slash version number" to the end would assist. Allow ID cards to be scanned for free through the credit card machines to check if still valid or stolen would help as well. The ID number system needs to be relooked at in these electronic times.

The Luhn algorithm does allow a fake ID to be produced, as verification is done mathematically and not by consultation with HA records

An online shop I deal with has been caught like this, plus other fake info of course

What your South African ID number means and what it reveals about you

A database containing sensitive personal data, including South African ID numbers and plain text passwords, was discovered on a public web server belonging to ViewFines last year.

Prior to this, Home Affairs leaked data through a contact form on its website - while a real estate group exposed a database containing a variety of details of essentially every South African in 2017.
I have just tried to apply for my RSA passport on line and they will not let me because I was not born in South Africa. The only way they could have known this is from my ID number. What part of the number gives this away?

The third last digit. 1 denotes non South African citizen.

Or its part of the meta data assigned to your ID number that you are naturalised SA citizen.... but yes, that value is also part of your ID number itself in the 3rd last digit.

Thanks for response-but no-I am a South African citizen and my last 3 numbers are 083. It must be in the middle 4 numbers which for me are 5143. I know the 5 indicates male-the other 3 somehow must show i was not born in RSA?

No they don't.

If your last numbers are 083, then its merely the metadata attached to your ID number that shows them you weren't born in SA.

THIS
Is only a small part of the larger story

HOW are your fingerprints tied to your ID number ?
WHAT version database is used to store ALL this information ?
WHO has access to the RDBMS ?
HOW many security levels are there ?
HAS a search ever been done on YOUR records ?
WHO did the search ?

As far as I am concerned privacy and the protection of privacy are as tenuous in SA as they are in China
The actions of the STATE in relation to YOUR PRIVATE information is also just as OPAQUE !

I've asked a few people what their ID numbers are.

Just for the hell of it.

The one person gets 45 when he adds the numbers. So there is a remainder. He has an SA Matric and hs even studied further. Has an ID and passport etc.

Really odd:unsure::unsure:

No. The 5 shows male. The 143 is you are the 143rd male birth registered for that day.

A Gost spammer phoned me one day, and I decided to answer her, she from a well known bank, now I know a bank is not suppose to phone me unless we established communication in this regard.
1-Hello sir, I am Mrs-XXX, just to confirm, this is your name and address.
2-Me to the caller:Madem please provide me with your ID Number before we continiue, seeing you got my details, I know nothing about you, neither have I met you in the bank before.
3--Her response.......................Toet-Toet-Toet...... call vanished.
4-As far as I am concerned, she's in a cloud somewhere, keep floating my lady.
