What's a decent Single Cab Bakkie for R35k or less?

I'd like one that's light on petrol, but the main idea is for one-two people to sleep in it when I go to festivals etc - I can't stand sleeping in a tent.

So far a quick Gumtree search showed the Nissan 1400 (champ?) and the Mazda Rustler, but I am not sure if these are good picks or not.

Nissan 1400 is a great little car, but emphasis on little, and there's nothing wrong with a Rustler provided it hasn't rusted away.

Both have proved themselves to be long lasting mechanically, though the Mazda could possibly be a poor choice if it has ever lived near the coast - they rust under the driver and passenger's feet, as well as front shock turrets - be very careful - I'll try and post a couple of "Ruster" pics.

The Nissan is very old tech compared to the newer types - Corsa, NP200. All of them are built to be abused by courier drivers and plumbers.

The engine technology in the old ones are old, so they are not particularly frugal. If your right foot behaves, they should all be similarly reasonable.

I can't sleep standing either
I suspect they might all be too short to sleep in.

Is the Nissan 1400 just as prone to rust the 'ruster'? I really like the look of the 1400 as well :D

Ohoho damn!

Quality post Fazda, I will definitely check for rust particularly in those areas. How much would it cost to fix these types of rusted?

I'm gonna say no. There are still plenty old ones here by the coast that look just fine. Great little bakkies.

Also look at an Isuzu KB as mentioned above, solid bakkies.
