I've just spoken to the above mentioned guy - he lives around the corner from me and has agreed to let me borrow it for a week and see if it's something I am happy with.
If I like it, I can pay it off type deal "Gentleman's agreement" (which is so refreshing in this day and age!!!)

I'm going to fetch it on Sunday and then I'll take it from there.

It's certainly nicer than the Gobii.

cerebus;

If I was to get the Kindle - would you be willing to flash the OS for me?
I have no idea how to do it - if you don't mind or would I have to bribe you? :D

I'd be willing to do that yes. There's a fairly healthy community on XDA dedicated to the roms and flashing tools. Naturally, I can't assume the risk of bricking it but I've never till now managed to brick a device to the point that it was beyond recovery, despite occasional bouts of stupefying incompetence on my part ;)

Hahaha. Ok, cool. I'll first see how the unit works on it's own (since it will be on loan) and then take it from there.
But after reading this: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Gutenberg:Kindle_Fire_Review
I am concerned.

Yes, Amazon views the Fire as a content delivery mechanism for themselves. That's why they tend to price it so well, because they're giving away the handle and counting on selling blades.
(In addition, the 1st gen Nexus7 has the same screen resolution and would probably be a better option for you)

Consider that.

Well, there is a guy selling a Kindle Fire HD 7" and it has (which I don't really care about) Dolby Audio, Dual-Band Wi-Fi, 16 GB and is in perfect condition for R1750.

I really only want it to view the PDF's nicely - do you guys think this is worth considering?

No, PDF files on 7" are clumsy to use and more difficult to read than on 10".

PDFs don't work well on the Kindles (e-ink...don't know on the fires).

Technically they are supported, but the font size and layout is all screwed. Feels a bit like browsing a webpage on a previous gen phone. And I don't think this is a kindle specific issue tbh.

Still Kindle FTW...except when it comes to PDFs.

Neither are very good. The screen resolution is very low for one thing. You're better off with the nexus.

Resolution sucks for your usage. Otherwise it is a decent tablet. The Sony xperia z tablet was R329 a month and you could use it in the shower... Then again it is a slippery slope to bumping up the price you are willing to pay.

You need hands on experience.

Hi all,

So, this morning I went to MTN and got myself a Sony Xperia Tablet Z Black.
I also purchased a 16GB SD card and slapped that in the device and it looks very cool.
I was up all hours of the night last night reading up on the Samsung / Sony reviews and 1 review just said it all for me and this morning after I went to IC, the Sony convinced me.

Congratulations on your purchase. It is always nice to get a new gadget. I have read a lot of favorable reviews on the forums on that device

So what type PDFs are you reading? Text only, scanned images or composite containing images text and vectors?

There are a myriad our viewers out there. Ezpdf, Adobe reader, Radae, King soft office, docstogo, Aldiko... IMO the two best I have found is ebookdroid and smartq reader. Awesome if you want to flip through pages smoothly. Adobe is still the best - there are the odd files that won't render on the other 2 but then adobe is rather basic. It wouldn't pick up from where I left.

The default viewer that I tried instore for the XPZ tab was not as fast as other viewers that I have used on my Chinese tablet.

I am using Adobe Acrobat to view PDF's such as medical PDF books so they are images and text etc which is why I was so on a mission to make sure I got the right tablet.
I only got the unit yesterday but have spent most of the yesterday and today updating it to the latest software and updating everything else.

I have a major issue with how long the battery takes to charge on the unit, but other than that the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is pretty damn awesome!
