What's the Nikon equivalent of the 550D or 600D?

A friend of mine had her camera stolen and of course the insurance won't pay out but she needs to get a replacement either this week or at the show on the weekend.

Two questions;

1. What is the Nikon equivalent of the Canon 550D/600D

2. Is the Nikon worth getting now or is a replacement imminent?

She has a budget of about R10k and the affirmatives kindly left the 18-55 and 50 f1.8.

Thanks.

Makro still has the D90 on special with 4 lenses for R9999.99, look through their brochure on their website...

D90 is a BIG step up from the 550D/600D but well worth it!
The D3000/D3100 are really amateurish.

If you go with the D90 it's a good idea to take a D90 specific training course.

Prices are really good - You won't get as a good a camera (new) for the current price of the D90.

Don't get the Nikon D90, it is a dated model, and you will regret the purchase later.

I would recommend the Nikon D5100 (features the sensor from the 7000) or the D7000 (above price range)

The D5100 body costs R7.8K (https://www.ormsdirect.co.za/nikon-d5100-slr-digital-camera).
The D7000 body costs R11,5K (https://www.ormsdirect.co.za/nikon-d7000-slr-digital-camera).

As a comparison the 600D costs R7,4K (body only) from ORMS.

I have used the D5100 and the D3100 (D3100 great for most first time DSLR users, yet I would recommend spending the extra on the D5100).

The D5100 replaced the D5000, and the D7000 is a new entry to replace the D90. (sort-of, ask/google for details), so you will not have replacement problems with either. D5100 was released early winter this year.

Regards

I would get the D90, it is a good body and you get 4 lenses to use... I still shoot with my 350D Canon which only has 8mp

uuum, I seem slightly confused... In the original post you say that the 2 lenses were not stolen, and later you explain that the friend had a Canon. Would it then not make sense to keep with a Canon body and make use of the already available glass?
